Increasing incidence of acute diarrhea may occur after a storm where access to clean water, and sanitary facilities are limited.

The primary goal of treating any form of diarrhea—viral, bacterial, parasitic, or non-infectious—is preventing dehydration.

General measures to prevent diarrhea:
✅ Wash hands regularly with soap and water.
✅ Maintain a clean living environment.
✅ Maintain good personal hygiene including the following:
➡️ Follow good hygienic practices during food preparation.
➡️ Do not share eating utensils or drinking containers.
➡️ Do not share personal toilet articles such as toothbrushes or towels with anyone else.

Home remedies to prevent dehydration:
✅ give adequate oral rehydrating solution to replenish all fluid and electrolyte losses (only use acceptable, palatable and well tolerated ORS solutions). Energy drinks are not recommended as rehydrating fluids.
✅ supplemental zinc (dose of 10mg elemental zinc for children below 6months old and 20mg elemental zinc for children 6months old and above). As per the WHO recommendations, zinc can decrease the duration of diarrhea and help prevent recurrence for 3months.
✅ probiotics can help but use only the recommended strains (Lactobacillus GG, Lactobacillus reuteri, Saccharomyces boulardii are among the available probiotics in the Phil market).

For prolonged diarrhea and persistent symptoms of dehydration, please consult your pediatrician.

Leptospirosis is a bacterial infection we get from animals especially during floods. It’s spread through their urine, especially from dogs, rodents, and farm animals.

Take the following steps to protect yourself:
➡️Avoid touching fresh water or soil that may be contaminated with animal urine
➡️Avoid touching objects that may be contaminated with animal urine, such as animal bedding
➡️Don't wade, swim, or put your head in floodwaters or water from lakes, rivers, or swamps. Especially avoid freshwater contact after flooding or heavy rain.
➡️If it is not possible to avoid wading in floodwaters or other fresh water, wear protective clothing like footwear and cover cuts and wounds with waterproof bandages or dressing.
➡️Make water safe for drinking by boiling or using an appropriate chemical treatment

As soon as there is exposure to animal urine or infection is suspected:
➡️Immediately dry off the urine splash (leptospires tend to dry out easily), then wash the area with soap and clean water
➡️wash out fresh or old cuts and grazes with water and disinfectant, and dry well
➡️flush out your mouth and eyes, and any exposed skin, with lots of running water

See a doctor within 24 hours of suspected exposure or if flu-like symptoms develop. Antibiotic prophylaxis (with doxycycline or amoxicillin) should be given if contamination is suspected. Please consult your doctor.

Constipation is infrequent bowel movements, typically fewer than 3x in a week. In most cases, child’s constipation is short term and resolves with treatment.

How to recognize symptoms of constipation:

Babies
✅Breastfeed babies may not have regular bowel movements as breastmilk is easily digestible.
✅Some infants get constipated once solid foods are started.
✅Symptoms of constipation in a baby or infant include:
➡️pellet-like/goat like stools
➡️difficulty passing stools
➡️crying during bowel movements
➡️hard, dry stools
➡️less frequent bowel movements

Toddlers
✅May manifest with constipation as follows:
➡️unusually large stools
➡️stomach feels hard to the touch
➡️abdominal swelling
➡️flatulence
➡️traces of blood on toilet paper (due to small tears around the a**s from straining)

Older kids
✅Along with the aforementioned symptoms, may complain:
➡️stomach pain
➡️traces of liquid in their underwear from backed up stool in the re**um
➡️pain during bowel movements and avoid going to the bathroom

Several home remedies can help soften stools and relieve constipation:
✅Drink more water
✅Drink some fresh fruit juice
✅Add more high fiber foods
✅Massage your baby's tummy
✅Correct position during defecation ‘squatty potty’
✅Exercise daily

If despite all these remedies, you noted persistent constipation, please consult your friendly pediatricians to rule out anatomic causes of constipation.
