Increasing incidence of acute diarrhea may occur after a storm where access to clean water, and sanitary facilities are limited.
The primary goal of treating any form of diarrhea—viral, bacterial, parasitic, or non-infectious—is preventing dehydration.
General measures to prevent diarrhea:
✅ Wash hands regularly with soap and water.
✅ Maintain a clean living environment.
✅ Maintain good personal hygiene including the following:
➡️ Follow good hygienic practices during food preparation.
➡️ Do not share eating utensils or drinking containers.
➡️ Do not share personal toilet articles such as toothbrushes or towels with anyone else.
Home remedies to prevent dehydration:
✅ give adequate oral rehydrating solution to replenish all fluid and electrolyte losses (only use acceptable, palatable and well tolerated ORS solutions). Energy drinks are not recommended as rehydrating fluids.
✅ supplemental zinc (dose of 10mg elemental zinc for children below 6months old and 20mg elemental zinc for children 6months old and above). As per the WHO recommendations, zinc can decrease the duration of diarrhea and help prevent recurrence for 3months.
✅ probiotics can help but use only the recommended strains (Lactobacillus GG, Lactobacillus reuteri, Saccharomyces boulardii are among the available probiotics in the Phil market).
For prolonged diarrhea and persistent symptoms of dehydration, please consult your pediatrician.
