The link between influenza and medical complications beyond the primary respiratory illness is well established and plays a role in the high mortality rates of this disease. Hypertension is a major risk factor for stroke and coronary artery disease, responsible for a large part of the deaths caused by hypertension.

Researchers investigated the effect of influenza vaccination on mortality and outcomes in patients with hypertension without significant cardiovascular comorbidity. They reported a reduced risk of cardiovascular death, indicating cardiovascular benefits beyond immunoprotection.
