In a one room affair of the former Bible training school for women known as โDispensaria Betaniaโ located along Rizal Avenue, Sta. Cruz, Manila was born our healing ministry on December 10, 1906, Dr. Rebecca Parish, a missionary doctor from Indiana, USA was sent by the Womenโs Foreign Missionary Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church to pioneer the effort. A Methodist layman from St. Paul Minnesota donated money to purchase a piece of land and construct a two story building as a memorial for his late missionary wife, Mrs. MARY JOHNSTON, after which the hospital was named.
Two years after a huge fire destroyed the hospital in 1911; the US government donated eleven thousand US dollars for the construction of a wing to house the Maternity Ward, Dispensary and Milk Station. At the outbreak of World War II, the hospital that was originally intended to serve women and children now became a General Hospital. This new general hospital was inaugurated on August 26, 1950 by no less than then Philippine President Elpidio Quirino, In his speech he said โI wish there were more hospitals in the country that could render as much service as this hospital has rendered.โ
Its Centennial Celebration held December 11, 2006, had for its theme โ100 Years of Healing and Caringโ Fittingly, the hospital has for its part served the people with healthcare skills and dedication throughout all that time. It continues to do so amidst the challenges of the present years. Today, the Mary Johnston Hospital stays true to its mission of affording health equity by steadfastly giving access to the marginalized sector of its continually while maintaining its excellence in continually serving the broader population.
The hospital has embraced a new tagline: โHEALING TOGETHERโ, a decade after its centennial. It believes that as its patients enter infirmed and depart well, both those that serve and those served are made whole, physically and spiritually led by the hand of the greatest Physician, our Lord Jesus Christ. This is anchored on a platform of rendering the highest quality of participative partnerโ building care, health education and community service. It endeavors to provide a healing experience that sets its highest premium for customer-focused, cost-effective, efficient, excellent, integrated patient-centered care.
