When you work out, are you doing too much or not enough? There’s a simple way to know: Your target heart rate

A wearable activity tracker makes it super easy to track your heart rate or take your pulse on the inside of your wrist. If your heart rate is too high, you’re straining. If your heart rate is too low, you may want to push yourself a little harder, especially if you’re trying to lose weight.

How much do you know about your body's biological clock?

For many years we have known that living organisms, including humans, have an internal, biological clock that helps them anticipate and adapt to the regular rhythm of the day. But how does this clock actually work?

The research conducted by 2017 medicine laureate Michael Rosbash gave us a peek inside our biological clock and elucidate its inner workings. His discoveries explain how plants, animals and humans adapt their biological rhythm so that it is synchronised with the Earth’s revolutions. Our well-being is affected when there is a temporary mismatch between our external environment and this internal biological clock, for example when we experience jet lag.

Rosbash will be discussing why our body clock matters at the 2024 Nobel Week Dialogue happening on 9 December. The program will also include medicine laureates Drew Weissman and Charles Rice, and literature laureate Olga Tokarczuk for conversations about infectious disease, mental health and overall wellbeing.
