19/01/2024

World Leprosy Day is an annual observance that raises awareness about leprosy (also known as Hansen’s disease) and the importance of early detection and treatment. It is a day to challenge the stigma and discrimination often associated with this ancient and misunderstood disease. World Leprosy Day provides an opportunity to educate the public about leprosy’s curability and the need for compassion and inclusion for those affected.

What is World Leprosy Day?
World Leprosy Day, celebrated on the last Sunday in January, is an internationally recognized day dedicated to raising awareness of leprosy and its impact on individuals and communities. The day serves as a platform to promote efforts to eliminate the disease and support those who have been affected by it.

When is World Leprosy Day?
World Leprosy Day is observed on the last Sunday in January each year. It is a day for individuals, organizations, and governments to come together to address the challenges posed by leprosy and work towards its eradication.

How to Get Involved in World Leprosy Day
Here are some meaningful ways to participate in World Leprosy Day:

Learn About Leprosy: Take the time to educate yourself and others about leprosy, its symptoms, and how it is transmitted. Knowledge is a powerful tool in dispelling myths and reducing fear.
Support Leprosy Organizations: Contribute to organizations and charities dedicated to leprosy awareness, treatment, and research. Your donations can make a significant impact on the lives of those affected by the disease.
Spread Awareness: Use social media and other platforms to share information about World Leprosy Day and its significance. Encourage your friends and followers to join the conversation and support the cause.
Organize or Attend Events: Participate in events, seminars, or webinars related to leprosy awareness and treatment. These events often feature experts who can provide valuable insights.
Advocate for Inclusion: Speak out against discrimination and stigma associated with leprosy. Advocate for the rights and inclusion of individuals affected by the disease in all aspects of society.
History of World Leprosy Day
World Leprosy Day has a historical significance dating back to the work of Raoul Follereau, a French writer and journalist who dedicated his life to advocating for those affected by leprosy. He initiated the first World Leprosy Day on the last Sunday in January 1954, coinciding with the anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi’s death, who had himself shown great compassion for leprosy patients.

Since then, World Leprosy Day has been observed globally, with the aim of raising awareness, dispelling myths, and promoting early diagnosis and treatment of leprosy. While progress has been made in combatting the disease, the day continues to be a reminder that leprosy is not yet completely eradicated and that efforts must be sustained to achieve this goal.

✅ Support fogging and spraying only in hotspot areas
✅ Sustain hydration lalo na kapag nilalagnat dahil sa dengue
At huwag kalimutan, kapag may sintomas ng dengue, konsulta sa Eksperto sa pinakamalapit na primary care provider sa inyong lugar.
