Today a 57 year old female patient came to my clinic due to pain everytime she swallows. She verbalized that this started last night after eating bangus for dinner. Indirect laryngoscopy shows fishbone on the back of the tongue near the base.

Rarely not tired, but never letting it show.

Our services are paid; our sacrifices are free.

Despite these, we get to change lives, influence them, and every once in a while save them.

Worth it? Every bit.

This morning I did open reduction and internal fixation to a patient with mandibular fracture. My patient was driving a motorcycle and was stopped by a group of bystanders and punched in the jaw. He then felt change in occlusion and pain when moving the jaw. X-ray was done revealing fracture on the left mandibular angle.

I did total thyroidectomy to a patient with large multinodular non-toxic goiter. The size of the mass compresses the airway and limits mobility thus causing difficulty breathing and swallowing

2 days ago, I did functional endoscopic sinus surgery to a patient with chronic rhinosinusitis with grade III nasal polyposis. This makes the patient totally unable to breath through the nose for years until the procedure

Patient: doc may bukol po sa gums ko, 2 years na. Maliit lang nuon pero lumalaki na po ngayon at sumasakit na din. Sana po matulungan ninyo akong matanggal ito.

*Work up was done and patient was managed as a case of radicular cyst. Excision and curettage was done.

Malaki na po yung bukol dahil late nang ipinatanggal kaya umabot na sa ngala-ngala at maxillary sinus.

Never enter 2025 without lessons from 2024. Here’s what 2024 has taught me:

1. YOUR GREATEST ASSET IS NOT YOUR TIME, BUT YOUR FOCUS. As I juggled my roles as an ENT specialist, an employee, a businessman, a husband and a father, time became more limited for me. Despite this, I found I was more productive. I learned that having focus in life drives you to be more systematic. If you have focus, time will not be your problem, it will be your friend.

2. TREAT YOUR HEALTH AS AN ASSET, BEFORE IT BECOMES A LIABILITY. In my practice, I see patients who would delay consulting until their condition worsens. Time is of the essence when it comes to health. So, if you want to avoid more prescriptions, more treatment costs, and longer healing time, prioritize your health.

3. COMPASSION MAKES A DIFFERENCE. I observe that patients and their relatives thank me not only when they get healed, but more so when they have felt that I stood with them in their healing journey. Whatever field you are in, extend the compassion of God in your service. Compassion is our privilege.

Let's press on to 2025 with renewed mind, faith and strength. Cheers, everyone! Happy New Year!
