A Brief History of the Zonta Club of Central Tuguegarao-- Club No. 1294, District 17, Area 04. The Zonta Club of Central Tuguegarao was chartered on June 8, 1990. Its charter membership was composed of 24 dedicated women leaders in different businesses and professions. Samia Abraham Henrage was the Charter President. This was organized by its mother club, the Zonta Club of Tuguegarao. In its 31 years of service and counting , the Zonta Club of Central Tuguegarao has had seventeen (17) presidents as of todate. Members meet once, either physically or virtually during the pandemic, every month where they discuss their plans, current activities and bond with each other. In the past, the venue for the meetings was usually at any designated place in the City. Although this has already changed as the Club was officially appointed as the Manager of the GAD Center of Tuguegarao City on December 10, 2020. The GAD Center will serve as the Club's office, at the same time, a shelter for victims of gender-based violence. It is located at the City Hall grounds in Carig, Tuguegarao City particularly at the Tuguegarao City Senior Citizens Building and manned by two personnel. For now, the Center is open from Monday to Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. Club Board & Committees: The Board is headed by the President, with the Vice President, Treasurer, Assistant Treasurer, Secretary for Recording and Secretary for Correspondence, as its officers together with five members as the Board of Directors. The immediate past president serves as an ex-officio member of the Board. Chairpersons are appointed to head the different committees--Service with Fund Raising and Environment as sub committees, Membership, Advocacy, Education, Z Club and Golden Z, Leadership, SOM, PR & Communications and GAD Management. Membership: Club membership averages 22; there was a time when membership reached 37 with a low of 17. Presently there are 59 paid-up members (2020-2022) and five new members due for registration. This will make the Club 64-strong. Orientation of new members is regularly held. Fellowships are also done in the the monthly membership meetings, either face to face or virtually or both. Membership is being strengthened through meetings, annual parties, during induction/installation ceremonies and field trips/out-of-town activities while attending seminars or officials activities of the Club. After the pandemic, the members hope to have a team building to cement the friendships that have been formed. ZONTA TODAY

You may have been hearing a lot about our club, the Zonta Club of Central Tuguegarao, which is one of the two clubs here in this City. Our club is a member of the Zonta International, a global community of more than 29,000 women and men in nearly 1,200 Zonta clubs in 63 countries. In the Philippines, there are 51 active clubs and counting with 1,800 members. Zonta International has provided resources to empower women and girls and expand their access to education, health care, economic opportunities and safe living conditions. Zontians believe in making the world a better place by empowering women and finding joy in working together toward gender equity in a supportive community of like-minded professionals that extends to other countries and cultures. Zonta advocates to end violence against women and girls. Every year from November 25 through December 10, Zonta clubs around the world participate in Zonta Says NO to Violence Against Women, our international campaign to raise awareness of and increase actions to end violence against women and girls. Zonta empowers women in the workplace by providing educational scholarships to promote women in traditionally male-dominated fields. At the local level, Zonta clubs are making a difference. We identify the most urgent issues affecting women and girls in their communities and develop service and advocacy projects to address these challenges. The issues and solutions vary, as each is tailored to local needs. Under the new normal, the Club can be the link to the future because our tagline for this biennium 2020-2022 is The Link to the Future is NOW…Embrace the New Normal with Optimism for Women, and our theme is “Transitions, Changes and New Opportunities” which is very appropriate because all our programs and/or projects to be carried out should address efforts to "Recover" from the effects of the global crisis, and provide assistance to "Rebuild and Rehabilitate" the community. Since the start of the new biennium this June, we have embarked on activities that would address these needs such as the Gadget Mo, Sagot Ko project which aims to help young girls who belong to indigent families stay in school and pursue their online schooling. As of todate, we have distributed more than 100 gadgets to poor young girls and boys. As we posted in this page, this is one of the biggest “passion” projects that we have because the activity touched us to our very core as we experienced and witnessed their living conditions. One belonged to a family who was a victim of robbery, another has a blind mom, or whose parents lost their jobs during the pandemic, and one lives deep in the forests or in remote fields, or in urban poor areas or slums. Despite all the odds that we encounter during the planning and distribution, we carry on because we know that we make a difference in the lives of these young people. We also have the Knit and Crochet Project which aims to empower unemployed women by providing them a source of livelihood, generate income for the family and maintain their self-worth and self-esteem. We have partnered with several groups of women to produce beautiful crocheted products like face masks, sanitizer and alcohol holders, table runners, coasters, place mats and the latest, which became a hit, are the beautifully created dangling and hoops. The Club has earned a lot from the sales proceeds of these products. As our contribution in the prevention of the spread of the corona virus, we distributed masks, posters and flyers that disseminate information on how to fight the COVID 19 crisis. We have also helped in the alleviation of poverty by replenishing the community pantries in several adopted barangays. And this time, taking advantage of the benefits of internet connectivity, we launched this talk show, ALL ABOUT EVE, to help empower, educate and inspire women and girls about their relevance and importance in the community. This talk show will be one of the means to reach out to the people specially women and girls and listen to them. We make our Club more accessible if not physically then through the internet. We have revitalized our page which is open to the public and where we entertain comments, questions, or requests for assistance. You can easily search this Page on Facebook. Meanwhile, we now have our own physical office because we have been appointed as the Manager of the GAD Center of Tuguegarao City which is located at the city hall grounds in Carig. Any client of the club can meet us there and seek for our assistance. There are so many things to do and we have laid out so many plans for the biennium we are thankful to our partner organizations and agencies, families and friends who have been very supportive of our endeavours. Of course, these would not all be possible without the members’ active support and participation and of course, our God to whom we offer all the glory. Updated by: RACQUEL C. This initiative encourages plastic waste recovery by offering rice to solo parents in exchange for collected recyclable plastics—an effort designed to mitigate flooding by reducing plastic waste in local waterways.

During the meeting, President Sedano announced ZCCT’s participation in the upcoming 2nd Quarterly Meeting of the Regional Committee on Anti-Trafficking and Violence Against Women and Children II (RCAT-VAWC II), scheduled for 26-29 August 2025, in Angeles, Pampanga. Zonta Club of Central Tuguegarao in Partnership with Atty. Mila Catabay- Lauigan Implements Rice Incentive Program to Promote Plastic Waste Recovery in Linao Norte

July 3, 2025 - The Zonta Club of Central Tuguegarao (ZCCT) in partnership with Atty. Mila Catabay-Lauigan has officially implemented a community-based plastic waste recovery initiative in Barangay Linao Norte, Tuguegarao City, marked by the turnover of packed rice to be used as incentives for residents, particularly women solo parents, participating in the program.

This project is part of a broader Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) between ZCCT, represented by its President Josefina T. Sedano, and Barangay Linao Norte, led by Barangay Captain Reynaldo Narag. The partnership aims to combat climate change and mitigate flooding by reducing plastic waste that clogs drainage systems.

Under the agreement, ZCCT commits to providing rice monthly, which the barangay will exchange with residents in return for collected recyclable plastics. Past Area Director and current Country Club Creator, Atty. Mila Catabay-Lauigan, donated this batch of rice provisions for participating solo parents of Linao Norte. This partnership will continue for the next 6 months and it is hoped that the barangay residents will sustain this program as a way of life.

The rice provisions were turned over during the activity held at the barangay hall of Linao Norte. The rice will serve as an incentive for residents who actively engage in the segregation and collection of plastics.

The barangay, on its part, will collect, record, and deliver the segregated plastics to Reggie’s Junk Shop for proper recycling and disposal.

For this batch, a total of 150 kilos of plastics were collected from 19 women solo parents of Linao Norte. For 5 kilos of plastic, the resident shall receive 1 bag of rice; 10 kilos of plastic, 2 bags of rice; 15 kilos of plastic, 3 bags of rice; and for 20 kilos of plastic and above, 4 bags of rice. Each bag contains 5 kilos of rice. A total of 32 bags of rice were given to the participating women.

The project underscores ZCCT’s advocacy not only for environmental sustainability but also for empowering women and girls, who are often the most affected by climate-related issues. Through practical incentives and strategic partnerships, the club aims to build a cleaner, safer, and more equitable community.

In response to the campaign against family violence launched by the Government through DSWD, the Club, in August 2000, signed a resolution condemning all forms of violence against women & children in support of the National Family Violence Prevention Program of the DSWD. The Club also promoted the establishment of a help desk for women victims of violence, distributed and displayed in all barangay halls the emergency numbers women victims of violence can call. The Club, through its lawyer members, conducted several lectures on Republic Act. 9262 (Violence against women & their children law) in government agencies, schools and universities, among barangay officials, and others not only in the city but also in the entire province and even in nearby provinces. Legal assistance was also extended to women victims of violence. Signature campaigns were also launched to increase awareness on Zonta’s mission to eliminate violence against women and children. 4. Literacy, Education & Advancement of Women: Given women’s limited access to education and information, and scarcity of financial resources, a holistic & coordinated approach was adopted to improve women’s health, nutrition, their social wellbeing, and raising of their self-esteem. A series of lectures was undertaken on the welfare of women & children. A briefing was conducted on proper health management & prevention of common illness and tropical diseases prevalent in the Philippines such as dengue etc. Preventive measures with the proper medical remedies were also discussed. Social & Family Welfare & Responsible parenthood were also part of the lecture. 5. Partnership with the DSWD Regional Haven For Women: Through the years, the Zonta Club of Central Tuguegarao has worked as a distinguished partner of the Department of Social Welfare & Development-Regional Haven for Women. It sustained its commitment to share love & time with the residents who are victims of r**e, in**st, physical abuse, molestation, abandonment, who are in dire need of psychological & social support. The Club takes active part in the processing of the residents by holding regular confidence-building activities, socialization and interaction. It also provides health programs utilizing its medical doctors and dentist-members by giving them medical & dental services. We also distribute toiletries, beauty & hygiene materials. Through our constant presence & interaction, we obtain first-hand information on the actual experiences of women victims. Zontians provide the moral support and a shoulder to cry on and in the process acquire in-depth understanding of the problems usually encountered by women victims at the hand of their partners. By holding regular confidence-building activities with them, we encourage them to become productive citizens. Advocacy: The Club regularly sponsors several symposia on women’s rights. We also never miss celebrating International Women’s month yearly in cooperation with other government and non-government agencies. The Club also regularly sponsors lectures & symposia on Anti- violence against women and children, gender sensitivity programs for college students in various universities in the city, for high school teachers in different schools, parents in the different barangays, in the course of doing service projects for women and children, like medical & dental missions. The Club has printed and posted stickers & tarpaulins, and produced bookmarks promoting women’s and children’s rights. Stickers were distributed to motor vehicles during the celebration of Zonta International Day and other significant days of Zonta. We also go on radio interviews and local TV cables to promote our advocacies. Club Initiatives For three years in a row, the club has launched a search for ordinary women with extra- ordinary achievements to give honor and recognition to these women in especially difficult circumstances like single mothers, victims of violence survivors, and those who have overcome their difficult situations and emerged even more successful and empowered. These women are recognized so other women can draw inspiration from their sheer strength and determination. Apart from the recognition for the outstanding women, cash prizes were given to them to start small businesses to help support their families. Gift giving has always been among the various activities of the club. Fundraising The Cub raises funds to support its service projects through sale of raffle draw tickets, jewelry auction, fashion show etc. District & Area Activities The club has been actively participating in all Area or District activities. Officers and Board of Directors always attend & participate in the Officers Training Program conducted by the District. It has already hosted Area meetings and is slated to be in charge again in the forthcoming area meeting in May 2014. One member, Susan Carag, has been an Area Director while another member, Mila Lauigan, has been a District Committee Chair on Legislative Awareness and Advocacy. She is also the incoming area Director of Area 4. International Activities Club officers usually attend International Conventions. Five members have already registered to attend the forthcoming International Convention at Orlando, Florida. Zonta International Foundation The club contributes to ZI Foundation through its individual members’ donations. Prepared by: Raquel Sumabat, Club Historian. April 2014
