The Schools Division of Maguindanao del Norte, through its Health and Nutrition Unit, in partnership with the Office of the Provincial Government of Maguindanao del Norte, successfully conducted the Orientation on BARMM WASH in Schools Policy for Madaris and Private Elementary and Secondary Schools on October 24, 2024, at Alnor Convention Hall, Cotabato City.

This event was held in compliance with MBHTE Memorandum No. 192 s. 2020, dated February 5, 2020, which outlines the “Policy on WASH in School Standards and Implementing Guidelines in BARMM.” The policy aims to foster proper hygiene and sanitation practices by providing hygiene and sanitation education and setting standards for safe water and adequate sanitation facilities. It also mandates active support from the Basic Education and Madaris sectors.

The orientation aimed to:
* Enhance knowledge and understanding of the importance of WASH in schools, its impact on student health, learning, and overall well-being.
* Develop skills and capacities to plan, implement, monitor, and evaluate effective WASH programs within their schools.

Participants in this orientation included School Heads of both SMC Madaris and Private Elementary and Secondary Schools, along with one teacher from each of these schools. The event was funded by the Provincial Office of Maguindanao del Norte and facilitated by the SDO-MDN HNU and ICT team.

Part of the program was the awarding ceremony for the winners of the division-level Global Handwashing Day Celebration Contest, with the presence of the School Head, Coach, and Student:

The Schools Division Office of Maguindanao del Norte, through its Health and Nutrition Unit in partnership with the Philippine Red Cross Cotabato City Maguindanao Chapter and the Provincial Nutrition Office of Maguindanao del Norte, successfully conducted the Division Kick-Off Celebration of the 2024 Global Handwashing Day with the global theme “Why are clean hands still important?” held on October 15, 2024, at Don Antonio Martinez Sr. Elementary School, Datu Odin Sinsuat, Maguindanao del Norte.

Global Handwashing Day is celebrated on October 15th to emphasize the importance of hand hygiene in public health. The 2024 theme, “Why are clean hands still important?”, highlights handwashing’s role in preventing diseases and saving lives. This day aims to raise awareness about handwashing with soap as an effective, affordable way to prevent illnesses and promote best practices in hand hygiene. By fostering a culture of hand hygiene, we can create safer environments, especially in schools and communities. Despite health advancements, handwashing remains a crucial tool in fighting disease.

Don Antonio Martinez Sr. Elementary School, headed by the School Head Ofelia F. Nasilu-an, LPT, MAEd, was selected as the host school for this year’s GHD 2024 Division Kick-Off celebration. Dignitaries in attendance included MBHTE HNU Regional Dentist/WINS Focal Dr. Ferdaus A. Gampong-Manalao, PNAO NutriWASH Focal Melzheen R. Pecision, RMT (represented by her staff), and Administrator/WASH Focal of PRCCCMC Rosemelyn Gayong, RMT with her PRC team.

Relative to the program, ceremonial activities were conducted such as the distribution of hygiene kits sponsored by the Provincial Nutrition Office of Maguindanao del Norte, initiated by PNAO/NutriWASH Focal Melzheen R. Pecision, RMT, and the Philippine Red Cross Cotabato City Maguindanao Chapter led by Rosamalyn Gayong, RMT, followed by the ceremonial handwashing of all partners, learners, and stakeholders.

This success would not have been possible without the support and help of the following partners from the Philippine Red Cross Cotabato City Maguindanao Chapter and the Provincial Nutrition Office of Maguindanao del Norte, MBHTE WASH Focal Dr. Ferdaus A. The Schools Division of Maguindanao del Norte, through the Health and Nutrition Section, successfully conducted the Orientation on the Implementing Guidelines of the School-Based Feeding Program (SBFP) and School Dental Health Care Program (SDHCP) for S.Y. 2024-2025, was held on October 1, 2024, at Camp Siongco Elementary School, Awang, Datu Odin Sinsuat, Maguindanao del Norte. This orientation was led by MBHTE HNU Team Regional SBFP Focal, Noraida D. Pabillan, RN, and Regional Dentist, Dr. Ferdaus A. Gampong-Manalao.

The SBFP will continue to be implemented as a take-home ration program. Food commodities will be delivered to schools in two tranches, each covering 60 feeding days, to complete the 120 feeding days. Each child will receive 18 kilos of Iron Fortified Rice, 2 kilos of mung beans, 2 packs of 300g powdered milk, and 2 packs of 180g cereals for the 120-day period.

Participants in the orientation included 86 School Heads and 38 School Nurses from the 86 target schools of the SBFP for S.Y. 2024-2025.

School Heads and School Nurses are expected to ensure the smooth implementation of the SBFP and SDHCP within their schools. Their commitment is crucial to ensuring no Bangsamoro child is left behind in the BARMM region, contributing to the success of these programs and the well-being of the target learners.

The Schools Division of Maguindanao del Norte, through its Health & Nutrition Unit, participated in the 3rd Provincial Nutri-WASH Council Meeting organized by the Provincial Nutrition Action Office of Maguindanao del Norte. The meeting took place on September 23, 2024, at the Maguindanao del Norte Provincial Satellite Office Conference Room in Cotabato City and was led by Melzheen R. Pecsion, RMT, Executive Assistant II/Nutri-WASH Focal of PNAO, and Engr. Fatima Bansuan, EnP, of PPDC.

Representatives from various agencies, including the MBHTE Schools Division of Maguindanao del Norte, IPHO-Maguindanao, MSSD, and Municipal Nutrition Action Officers (MNAOs), attended the meeting. They presented their ongoing, accomplishment report and proposed Nutri-WASH action plans aimed at eliminating malnutrition and food insecurity in the province.

The Schools Division of Maguindanao del Norte started conducting the Field Validation for the Selection of the Brigada Eskwela Best Implementers (BEBI) 2024 on September 11, 2024, in line with the issued MBHTE Regional Memorandum No. 561 s. of 2024 dated August 27, 2024.

Brigada Eskwela, also known as the National Schools Maintenance Week, is an initiative mandated by Republic Act 8525 or the Adopt a School Program, which aims to encourage volunteerism and public-private partnerships in public education.

The Health and Nutrition Unit (HNU), together with the Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM), are part of the BEBI Monitoring Team under Criteria A: Brigada Eskwela School Preparation Effort. The indicators include: 1. Cleanliness of the School; 2. Functioning Toilets; 3. Functional WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) facilities; 4. Health Protocols in place; 5. School Safety and Security Plan in place and 6. Conducive Classrooms.

The Schools Division Office of Maguindanao del Norte through its Health & Nutrition Section, successfully conducted the First General Meeting of all School Nurses for School Year 2024-2025.

The meeting aimed to update all School Nurses, led by the Division Program Focals, on upcoming activities and required reports for Oplan Kalusugan sa Bangsamoro (OKB) Health Programs for S.Y. 2024-2025 such as WASH in Schools (WinS), School Based Feeding Program (SBFP), School Mental Health (SMH), Medical Dental & Nursing Services Program, National Drug Education Program (NDEP) and Adolescent Reproductive Health (ARH) Program. The SDO-MDN Nurses Association Officers, led by President Saheda A. Baraguir,RN, presented the Constitution and Bylaws along with future plans for the Nurses Week Celebration 2024.

The Schools Division Office of Maguindanao del Norte, through its Disaster Risk and Reduction Management (DRRM) and Health & Nutrition Unit (HNU), in partnership with 𝐒𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐫𝐞𝐧, successfully conducted the Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) Activities to selected schools affected by flash flooding and armed conflict last August 27-29, 2024.

The Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) Program is designed to fulfill the mandate of the Health and Nutrition Unit in the Ministry of Basic, Higher and Technical Education (MBHTE), with a special focus on providing psychosocial interventions. These interventions are particularly targeted at children and families in war-torn and disaster-stricken areas, offering them the necessary support to cope and recover from these traumatic circumstances.

The Province of Maguindanao del Norte have been dealing with severe flooding and ongoing armed conflicts in the past few months, presenting unprecedented challenges. These dual crises have not only caused physical devastation but also led to significant psychological and emotional trauma for the learners in the areas. The compounded effects of these disasters have disrupted their education, safety, and well-being creating an urgent need for targeted mental health and psychosocial support.

The following are the target schools that were selected: Campo Uno Elementary School from Matanog Municipality due to flash flood, Bai Hanina Sinsuat NHS, Mompong PS and Don A Martinez ES from Datu Odin Sinsuat Municipality due to Armed Conflict.

𝐓𝐑𝐀𝐈𝐍𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐎𝐍 𝐁𝐀𝐒𝐈𝐂 𝐅𝐎𝐎𝐃 𝐒𝐀𝐅𝐄𝐓𝐘 (𝐁𝐅𝐒) 𝐀𝐍𝐃 𝐇𝐀𝐙𝐀𝐑𝐃 𝐀𝐍𝐀𝐋𝐘𝐒𝐈𝐒 & 𝐂𝐑𝐈𝐓𝐈𝐂𝐀𝐋 𝐂𝐎𝐍𝐓𝐑𝐎𝐋 𝐏𝐎𝐈𝐍𝐓 (𝐇𝐀𝐂𝐂𝐏)

In consonance to the OUOPS No. 2024-09-03548 DepEd Memorandum from the Office of the Undersecretary for Operations – Bureau of Learner Support Services - School Health Division in partnership with the Food Safety and Hygiene Academy of the Philippines (FoodSHAP), sucessfully conducted the Training on Basic Food Safety (BFS) and Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) held last May 27-31, 2024 at Anne Raquel’s Resort, Olongapo City, Zambales.

The Republic Act No. 10611, otherwise known as the Philippine Food Safety Act of 2013, requires that every food business operator must have a designated Food Safety Compliance Officer (FSCO) in charge of food safety management and its legal compliance. The Department of Education (DepEd), considered as a food business operator having school canteens that caters to millions of learners in public elementary and secondary schools, is also implementing the School-Based Feeding Program (SBFP) which involves provisions of hot meals/nutritious food products and milk to undernourished Kinder to Grade 6 learners. Thus, this training will equip the health personnel and other program coordinators with the knowledge on how to properly handle and prepare food not just for school canteen operations but also for the SBFP implementation.

The said training aims to:
* Enhance the program implementers' capacity on the basic concepts of Food Safety and Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP);
* Train additional DepEd health personnel and other program coordinators to be a certified Food Safety Compliance Officer (FSCO); and
* Update the database/ directory of DepEd FSCOs.

BFS and HACCP trainings are intensive and required participants’ concentration and focus during technical sessions/discussions. The said trainings will stand as prerequisites for the level of certification to attend the Food Safety Compliance Officer (FSCO) that will be held on July 22-26, 2024 within IloIlo City (venue to be announced).

The World Food Programme (WFP) in partnership with LGU's and MBHTE-BARMM, sucessfully conducted Workshop on Negotiated Procurement-Community Participation in the preparation for the upcoming implementation of the Home-Grown School Feeding held last May 28-30, 2024 at Sun City Suites Hotel, National Highway, General Santos City.

During the workshop, the following topics were discussed and reviewed:
•Requirements for the Negotiated Procurement for Community Participation process to enable the procuring entities to procure food commodities from smallholder farmers and/or cooperatives; and
•Procurement plan of LGUs and pilot schools for HGSF.

The said workshop was attended by officials from Health and Nutrition Unit of MBHTE-BARMM headed by Gizeel Amira I. Ali,RN as the Chief of HNU, SDO's Personnel, School Principal/School Feeding Coordinator of pilot elementary schools under the Schools Division Offices of Maguindanao del Norte and Maguindanao del Sur with other representatives from Local Government Unit of the pilot 7 municipalities.

The Ministry of Basic, Higher and Technical Education's (MBHTE) Health and Nutrition Unit sucessfully conducted the ROLL OUT TRAINING ON CHILDREN & ADOLESCENT MENTAL HEALTH AND PSYCHOSOCIAL SUPPORT with AJA/ADEPT and HEEADSSS ASSESSMENT held last April 15-21, 2024 at Blue Palm Resort, Libungan, North Cotabato.

The core objective of this training is to safeguard the emotional, psychological and social well-being of adolescents and children within the BARMM. The program aims to empower duty bearers with the necessary skills to address mental health issues effectively in educational and community settings through specialized training sessions. By enhancing communication between adolescents and healthcare providers, the initiative seeks to improve adolescent healthcare providers by fostering trust, promoting openness, and employing appropriate intervention strategies. This initiative aligns with the MBHTE's overarching goal of harmonizing efforts in nutrition education and learer support services.

The said training was attended by the following SDO-MDN participants:

The Schools Division of Maguindanao del Norte through its Health and Nutrition Unit with the Regional SBFP Team successfully conducted the Distribution of the School Based Feeding Program (SBFP) Commodities (2nd Tranche) to target recipients of 20,000 learners for the S.Y. 2023-2024 held last May 21-24, 2024.

The target recipients will receive 12kgs of Iron-Fortified Rice (IFR) and a box of commodities containing 180g of cereals, 300g of powdered milk, and 1kg of mung beans, which are expected to sustain the nutritional needs of the learners for 120 feeding days.

This is in line with the Ministry of Basic, Higher and Technical Education (MBHTE)-BARMM Minister Hon. Mohagher M. Iqbal for his commitment to leave no Bangsamoro learner will be left behind, the Ministry is dedicated to mitigating hunger and malnutrition in the Bangsamoro region.

𝐒𝐃𝐎-𝐌𝐃𝐍 𝐌𝐄𝐃𝐈𝐂𝐀𝐋 𝐓𝐄𝐀𝐌 ⛑️ 𝐁𝐀𝐑𝐌𝐌𝐀𝐀 𝐌𝐄𝐄𝐓 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟒

The Schools Division of Maguindanao del Norte, through its Health and Nutrition Unit, took a proactive stance of securing the health and safety of all student-athletes and coaches during the recently conducted BARMMAA Meet 2024 last May 11-15, 2024 at Cotabato City. The HNU organized and stationed all the SDO-MDN nurses to every playing field daily to attend to the needs of the athletes, thus ensuring that they were in good physical condition while competing in their respective sport events.

The presence of nurses and other medical support teams was crucial to providing immediate care particularly to those with health issues and concerns. They served as the athletes' and the whole event's support system, allowing events to transpire smoothly and safely.

With their dedication and allegiance, the HNU of the SDO-MDN recognizes the efforts and services rendered by its nurses in helping make the BARMMAA MEET 2024 a successful and safe event.
