UNDERSTANDING BELL'S PALSY or FACIAL MUSCLE PARALYSIS.
What is Bell's Palsy?
Bell's Palsy is a condition causing sudden weakness or paralysis on one side of the face due to a problem with the facial nerve. It's often attributed to inflammation and swelling of the seventh cranial nerve, which controls facial muscles. While the exact cause is unknown, it's thought to be related to inflammation and may be triggered by viral infections or other factors.
Symptoms?
Sudden weakness or paralysis on one side of the face, making it difficult to smile, frown, or close the eye even spilling water/food parts from the mouth, etc. And visible asymmetry of the face.
Treatment?
Steroids and antivirals are commonly used to help manage inflammation and promote recovery. Eye care is one of the priority. And most of all PHYSICAL THERAPY.
PHYSICAL THERAPY is beneficial for Bell's Palsy as it:
1. Helps improve facial muscle strength, coordination, and movement, which can be weakened or impaired by the condition.
2. It can also help prevent permanent muscle shrinkage and loss of facial symmetry.
3. Muscle re-education:
Physical Therapy exercises can help retrain facial muscles, improving their ability to move and function properly.
4. Strengthening and coordination:
Exercises can strengthen weakened facial muscles and improve coordination, allowing for more natural facial expressions.
