The successful conduct of ZCMC’s 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐙𝐞𝐫𝐨 𝐖𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐡 this January proved that real impact is not measured only by how much recyclable waste we collect—but by how consistently we practice proper waste segregation and waste reduction.

For one whole month, our units and offices turned daily routines into meaningful environmental action. Every bottle, carton, and piece of paper properly sorted reflected discipline, teamwork, and a shared commitment to a cleaner and healthier hospital environment.

In celebration of the 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐙𝐞𝐫𝐨 𝐖𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐡, Zamboanga City Medical Center successfully conducted a 𝐕𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐢𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐩 at the ZCMC Plant Nursery. The activity was actively participated in by the Housekeeping Unit and the Linen and Laundry Unit, who showed strong commitment to learning sustainable waste management practices through vermicomposting.

This initiative strengthens ZCMC’s efforts in reducing organic waste and transforming it into valuable compost for our hospital’s gardening and greening programs.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our resource speakers from the Office of the City Agriculturist for generously sharing their expertise and practical guidance, making this training both informative and inspiring.

As part of the continuing implementation of the Stray Animals Management at Hospital Premises Policy, Zamboanga City Medical Center (ZCMC), through its Housekeeping Unit and other concerned units, in coordination with the 𝐂𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐕𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐎𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐋𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐆𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐔𝐧𝐢𝐭 (𝐋𝐆𝐔), continues to carry out the safe, careful, and humane capture of stray animals found within the hospital premises.

For the month of January, several stray animals roaming around hospital buildings, walkways, parking areas, and open spaces were humanely secured and properly turned over to the City Pound for observation, care, and appropriate management.

This initiative is undertaken with compassion for animals and responsibility to the public, in order to:
✔️ Protect the safety and well-being of patients, staff, and visitors
✔️ Reduce the risk of rabies and other zoonotic diseases
✔️ Preserve a clean, orderly, and healing hospital environment
✔️ Uphold humane and ethical treatment of animals
✔️ Comply with Republic Act No. 9482 (Anti-Rabies Act of 2007) and local ordinances

𝐃𝐫. 𝐂𝐡𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐁𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐞 𝐁𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠, a Family Medicine Resident, successfully presented her case entitled “𝑺𝒕𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒔 𝒊𝒏 𝑺𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒕” at the Tzu Chi Conference Room, as part of her requirements for her one-month rotation in the Safety and Environment Unit for the 𝐎𝐜𝐜𝐮𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐒𝐚𝐟𝐞𝐭𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡 (𝐎𝐒𝐇) 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐦.

Zamboanga City Medical Center successfully underwent the 𝐨𝐧-𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 of key health facility development and quality tools conducted by the 𝐃𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡 – 𝐙𝐚𝐦𝐛𝐨𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐚 𝐏𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐮𝐥𝐚 𝐂𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡 𝐃𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 (𝐃𝐎𝐇 𝐙𝐏 𝐂𝐇𝐃) through the 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡 𝐅𝐚𝐜𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐃𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐔𝐧𝐢𝐭 (𝐇𝐅𝐃𝐔).

The results of the revalidation were very satisfactory, reflecting the hospital’s continuous efforts to align with national standards and strengthen systems for safe, efficient, and patient-centered healthcare services.

The revalidation covered the following:
✔️ IHOMP Self-Assessment Tool
✔️ Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) Tool
✔️ Quality Management System in Laboratory (QMS)
✔️ Health Care Waste Management (HCWM) Self-Assessment and Scorecard Tool

This accomplishment was achieved through the collective efforts of the Safety and Environment Unit (SAFEU), Infection Prevention and Control Committee (IPCC), Housekeeping Unit, Planning Unit, and Engineering and Facilities Management (EFM), alongside the support of various other offices and units whose invaluable contributions helped ensure the success of the activity.

We also extend our sincere appreciation to the Health Facility Development Unit (HFDU) for conducting the revalidation and providing guidance toward continuous improvement. These results inspire us to further strengthen our systems and deliver quality, safe, and people-centered care for our community.

Since 2021, the Medical Center has been propagating native tree seedlings, planting them across hospital grounds and sharing them beyond our walls that strengthens biodiversity, resilience, and environmental stewardship as part of healthcare delivery.

We’re starting the year strong and green! Zamboanga City Medical Center proudly celebrates its first harvest of the year with the successful picking of 𝐬𝐧𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐠𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐝 from our very own 𝑯𝒐𝒔𝒑𝒊𝒕𝒂𝒍 𝑽𝒆𝒈𝒆𝒕𝒂𝒃𝒍𝒆, 𝑭𝒓𝒖𝒊𝒕, 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑯𝒆𝒓𝒃 𝑮𝒂𝒓𝒅𝒆𝒏.

This milestone reflects more than just fresh produce, it is a symbol of sustainability in action, food awareness, and our commitment to a healthier environment within the hospital. Every harvest reminds us that caring for people also means caring for the planet.

Adding to this initiative, ZCMC also introduced “𝑻𝒂𝒓𝒑𝒐𝒕𝒔”, innovative planting pots made from reused tarpaulin. These tarpots give new life to old materials, reduce waste, and support urban gardening in a practical and creative way.

From garden to table, from waste to resource—this is how small actions create meaningful impact.
