World Su***de Prevention Day | WSPD 2025
Every 40 seconds, someone loses their life to su***de. In the Philippines, thousands of families feel this loss every year. Behind every number is a parent, a sibling, a friend, or a neighbor—someone whose life mattered.
Mental health struggles intensify during disasters, conflicts, and crises. When homes are destroyed and futures uncertain, invisible wounds—stress, anxiety, depression—can be just as devastating as physical losses.
The Philippine Red Cross (PRC) believes no one should face these battles alone. Across the country, PRC has been training RC143 Volunteers—ordinary people in every community—so they can recognize early warning signs, provide psychosocial first aid, and extend a listening ear to those in need. These volunteers, together with trained responders, bring hope where it is most needed.
We also conduct psychosocial support activities for children, families, and communities—helping people process, rebuild hope, and restore a sense of normalcy. One beneficiary shared: “When I joined the support sessions, I finally felt someone understood what I was going through. It gave me hope to move forward.” As one PRC volunteer reflected: “Every time I listen to someone share their story, I realize that even small acts of support can save a life.”
PRC continues to strengthen communities so neighbors and leaders can look out for one another, fostering a culture of care and resilience. And through RC143, our nationwide hotline, anyone can call and find someone ready to listen—because support should always be within reach.
Together with the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, we are calling for urgent action: to prioritize mental health in emergencies, integrate su***de prevention into health and social services, train responders and volunteers to recognize warning signs, create stigma-free spaces for open dialogue, and provide long-term support for survivors and families.
Mental health is health. On this World Su***de Prevention Day, PRC honors lives lost, stands with survivors, and recommits to saving lives every day.
Let us make today more than remembrance. Let us commit to protecting life, standing by those in pain, and ensuring no one is left behind.
