A Successful and Insightful Episode of Cuento y Salud!

Last March 15, 2025, P*P Western Mindanao Chapter, in collaboration with GBPV TV11, proudly aired another impactful episode of Cuento y Salud, focusing on the growing concern of Obesity.

With our esteemed guest, Dr. Karna Kamlon Igasan, a Nutrition Specialist and Internist, alongside our dynamic hosts, Mr. Albert Luna, Dr. Kathleen Marie Sta. Teresa, and Mr. Vilmar Marquez, we explored the alarming increase of obesity in the Philippines and its biological, behavioral, and environmental causes.

Dr. Igasan highlighted that over 30% of Filipinos are now classified as overweight or obese, with urban areas like Metro Manila showing the highest rates, as reported by the DOST-Food and Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI).

Understanding the Factors Behind Obesity

🔬 Biological Factors – Genetics, hormones (especially in pregnancy and menopause), and gut microbiota play a role in metabolism and fat storage. Some medications can also contribute to weight gain.
🧠 Behavioral Factors – Poor dietary habits, sugar addiction, lack of physical activity, and frequent consumption of processed foods significantly contribute to obesity.
🌍 Environmental Factors – The modern food industry, easy access to fast food, cultural norms around eating, and sedentary lifestyles in industrialized areas increase obesity rates.

🔎 Why is this important?
Understanding these factors helps us address obesity at its root cause rather than just treating its symptoms. A multifaceted approach including lifestyle changes, proper diet, and targeted interventions is needed to combat this growing health crisis.

Key Takeaways from the Episode

✅ Obesity is more than just weight gain, it affects internal organs and increases the risk of diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, arthritis, and stroke.
✅ BMI standards differ for Asians, with a BMI of 27.5 and above considered obese.
✅ Artificial sweeteners in "zero sugar" sodas, such as aspartame, may pose health risks, including a possible link to cancer, as noted by the World Health Organization (WHO).
✅ Processed food removes essential nutrients like fiber, leading to poor nutrition and metabolic diseases.
✅ Solutions include a healthy lifestyle, balanced diet, and strategies like intermittent fasting to manage weight effectively.

The episode concluded with a powerful message: “Prevention is better than cure. Understanding the root causes of obesity is key to addressing it effectively.”

A big thank you to our guest experts, hosts, and all viewers who tuned in! Let’s continue promoting awareness and making healthier choices for a better future.

💔 Broken Heart Syndrome: When Emotions Affect the Heart 💔

P*P Western Mindanao Health Educational Program presents Cuento y Salud on GPBV TV 11!

📺 Host: Mr.Albert Luna
🎙 Co-Host: Dr. Nelson Laja Nelson Nels
🩺 Resource Speaker: Dr. Kenneth Marie Trasporto-Santiago Dr. KenMarie C. Trasporto, MD, FP*P : Internal Medicine-Adult Cardiologist

🔎 Topic: Broken Heart Syndrome also known as Apical Ballooning Syndrome, Takotsubo Cardiomyopathy, or Stress-Induced Cardiomyopathy.

Dr. Trasporto-Santiago explains that this condition makes the heart appear like an “octopus trapped”, as seen in imaging studies. It is a form of cardiomyopathy, a disorder of the heart muscle where the affected part moves very slowly.

🔬 Key Facts About Broken Heart Syndrome:

✔️ A rare condition (2-3% of all cardiomyopathies), but cases have increased since the pandemic.
✔️ More common in postmenopausal women, though it can affect anyone, regardless of age or gender.
✔️ Symptoms mimic a heart attack: chest pain, shortness of breath, and ECG changes suggesting ischemia or infarction.
✔️ Unlike a heart attack, no coronary artery blockage is seen on angiography.
✔️ Triggered by emotional or physical stress, including extremes of emotions (not just grief but even overwhelming joy).

⚠️ Common Triggers:

🔹 Death or loss of a loved one
🔹 Serious illness in the family
🔹 Intense emotional distress (fear, anger, shock, or even extreme happiness)
🔹 Physical stressors such as surgery or severe illness

🏥 What Happens in the ER?

When a patient presents with suspected Takotsubo Cardiomyopathy, they are initially managed like a heart attack:
1️⃣ Immediate assessment – ECG, cardiac enzymes, and echocardiography
2️⃣ Coronary angiogram – to rule out true blockages
3️⃣ Supportive care – medications to help heart function, oxygen if needed
4️⃣ Identify and manage triggers – emotional support, stress management

📌 Most cases are transient and self-limiting, but those with existing heart disease, hypertension, or diabetes are at higher risk of complications.

🛡 Prevention: Protecting Your Heart from Emotional Stress

🔹 Maintain a positive outlook – optimism is key, as Dr. Laja emphasized
🔹 Balance mental and physical well-being
🔹 Control risk factors – manage hypertension, diabetes, and cholesterol
🔹 Live a heart-healthy lifestyle – avoid smoking, excessive alcohol, and illicit drugs

🌿 PHA Advocacy: 5-2-1-0-0 for a Healthy Heart!
✅ 5 servings of fruits and vegetables daily
✅ 2 hours or less of screen time
✅ 1 hour of physical activity
✅ 0 sugary drinks
✅ 0 smoking & illicit drugs

💙 Your heart is not just affected by what you eat or how you exercise, it is also shaped by how you feel. Take care of your emotional and mental health as much as your physical health!

🔄 Share this post to spread awareness and help others understand this unique heart condition!
