The monsoon season in Pakistan brings a much-needed respite from the heat, but the increased humidity and occasional downpours can also create a perfect environment for ENT problems. As the rain sets in, it's essential to take proactive steps to safeguard your health.
Common ENT Issues During the Monsoon:
Swimmer's Ear (Otitis Externa): This is a painful infection of the outer ear canal. It's often caused by water, laden with bacteria, getting trapped in the ear after swimming or getting caught in the rain. Symptoms include pain, itching, and a feeling of fullness in the ear.
Seasonal Allergies: The damp, humid weather can lead to an increase in mold spores and dust mites, which are major allergy triggers. This can cause persistent sneezing, a runny or blocked nose, and an itchy throat.
Viral Infections: The change in temperature and increased humidity make it easier for viruses to to thrive. This leads to a rise in common colds and flu, resulting in sore throats, coughs, and nasal congestion.
Sore Throat from Cold Drinks: While a cold drink feels refreshing, excessive consumption can irritate a sensitive throat, especially when exposed to sudden temperature changes.
Tips to Stay Healthy This Monsoon:
Dry Your Ears Thoroughly: After swimming or getting wet, tilt your head to the side to help water drain out. Use a soft towel to gently dry the outer ear. Avoid using cotton swabs.
Manage Allergies: If you have allergies, be mindful of indoor humidity. Use dehumidifiers if needed and keep your living spaces clean to minimize dust and mold.
Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of warm or room-temperature water to keep your throat and nasal passages moist.
Protect Yourself: Use a mask when in crowded or dusty areas to reduce exposure to allergens and germs.
