Sciatica refers to pain that radiates along the path of the sciatic nerve, which runs from the lower back, through the hips and buttocks, and down each leg. It typically affects only one side of the body.
*Common Causes:*
Herniated Disc – A slipped or bulging disc in the lumbar spine can press on the nerve.
Spinal Stenosis – Narrowing of the spinal canal can compress the nerve.
Piriformis Syndrome – The piriformis muscle in the buttocks irritates the sciatic nerve.
Spondylolisthesis – A vertebra slips out of place, pinching the nerve.
Trauma or Injury – Accidents or falls can damage the nerve.
*Symptoms:*
Sharp, shooting pain from the lower back to the leg
Numbness, tingling, or weakness in the affected leg
Pain that worsens with sitting, coughing, or sneezing
Burning sensation along the nerve path
*Treatment Options:*
Conservative Management:
Rest & Activity Modification – Avoid prolonged sitting or bending.
*Physiotherapy* – Stretching, strengthening, and posture correction.
Heat/Ice Therapy – Helps reduce inflammation and pain.
Medications – NSAIDs, muscle relaxants, or corticosteroid injections.
*Advanced Treatment:*
Chiropractic Adjustments – Helps realign the spine.
Epidural Steroid Injections – Reduce inflammation around the nerve.
Surgery (in severe cases) – If conservative treatments fail, options like microdiscectomy or laminectomy may be considered.
