Mastering the Order of Draw in Phlebotomy Accuracy in laboratory diagnostics starts at the very moment of blood collection! Following the correct "Order of Draw" is a critical standard in pathology. It prevents the cross-contamination of chemical additives between tubes, ensuring precise, reliable lab results and optimal patient care.

1. Blood Cultures (SPS): Always drawn first to guarantee a sterile sample. Ensure proper volumes (Pediatric: 3-5ml, Adult: 8-10ml).

2. Light Blue (Sodium Citrate): Crucial to fill exactly to the mark. Note: You may need to draw a discard tube first to prime the tubing.

3. Yellow (Clot Activator/Separator): Standard for serum determinations in Biochemistry.

4. Red Top (Empty): Used for serum collection when the yellow separator tube shouldn't be utilized.

5. Green (Sodium/Lithium Heparin): Used for plasma determinations.

6. Purple (EDTA): Must be drawn later in the sequence. If drawn too early, the EDTA can cross-contaminate preceding tubes and skew results.

7. Grey (Potassium Oxalate/Sodium Fluoride): Drawn last, as early collection can heavily interfere with both hematology and biochemistry tests.
