It’s World AMR Awareness Week, and there are things you need to know:

🦠 Antimicrobial resistance or AMR occurs when bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites no longer respond to treatment.

💊 Antimicrobials are medicines used to prevent and treat infections, such as antibiotics and antivirals.

🤒 The overuse and misuse of antimicrobials causes microbes to adapt and become resistant, making medicine ineffective against infections.

⚠️ AMR threatens our ability to treat common infections and to perform life-saving procedures.

AMR kills more people annually than any single infectious disease. Staying healthy is important to protect yourself from AMR. Here’s what you can do:

✅ Keep your hands clean
✅ Only take antibiotics when prescribed
✅ Never share antibiotics
✅ Stay up-to-date with your vaccines

AMR can affect anyone - turning minor injuries, routine surgeries, or common infections into life-threatening situations.

If we act now, we can still preserve the effectiveness of life-saving treatments.

World Stroke Day is recognized every year on October 29, aimed at raising awareness about strokes and promoting their prevention and treatment. This observance highlights the urgency of recognizing stroke symptoms, which can include sudden numbness, confusion, difficulty speaking, and severe headache. It emphasizes the importance of acting quickly by using the acronym FAST (Face drooping, Arm weakness, Speech difficulties, Time to call emergency services) to facilitate timely medical intervention, which can significantly improve outcomes. The day also focuses on educating the public about risk factors such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and lifestyle choices, advocating for healthier habits and regular health screenings. By fostering global awareness and education, World Stroke Day aims to reduce the incidence of strokes and enhance the quality of care for those affected.

Special thanks to Dr Asma Yahya, Consultant Forensic Medicine & Toxicology.

HIV, or Human Immunodeficiency Virus, is a virus that attacks the immune system, specifically the CD4 cells (T cells), which can lead to immunodeficiency syndrome, known as AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome). Globally, HIV remains a significant public health issue, and effective awareness programs are crucial in combating its spread. These programs aim to educate individuals about how HIV is transmitted—primarily through unprotected sexual contact, sharing needles, and from mother to child during childbirth or breastfeeding. Awareness initiatives focus on promoting safe practices, reducing stigma, and increasing access to testing and treatment. They also highlight the importance of early diagnosis and the effectiveness of antiretroviral therapy, which can help individuals manage the virus and live healthy lives. By raising awareness and understanding, these programs play a vital role in preventing new infections and supporting affected individuals in communities worldwide.

Similarly, Ms Farya Nabeel, Psychologist at Allied Hospital, Faisalabad, played a pivotal role in spreading awareness regarding HIV infection in Pakistan. We appreciate her hard work and dedication towards the community.
