The Gilgit Baltistan Goodwill Movement (GBGM) is a non profit organization dedicated to supporting individuals with disabilities in the Gilgit Baltistan region of Pakistan. Established in 2021 by founders Ghulam Muhammad Baig Farhan Baig and Hakim Ullah Khan, GBGM has grown from a social media forum advocating for disability rights into a registered charity under the Provincial Government of Gilgit Baltistan.

🌿 Introducing GBGM’s New Social Enterprise Initiative
Gilgit-Baltistan’s Goodwill Movement (GBGM) — the region’s first organization proudly led by persons with disabilities (PWDs) — is launching an initiative that echoes the spirit I once witnessed in that music shop overseas.

We are hoping to establish a Production Shop and Charity Showroom in Gilgit, designed to empower PWDs and underprivileged women through skill utilization, income generation, and community support.

This project aims to turn local craftsmanship into livelihoods, and compassion into sustainability — ensuring that charity becomes a pathway to independence, not dependency.

💪 Why This Matters
Gilgit-Baltistan is home to incredibly talented artisans — women and PWDs skilled in embroidery, tailoring, jewelry-making, and traditional crafts. Yet many face barriers such as:

Limited market access
Financial constraints
Mobility challenges
Lack of workspace

At the same time, tourist demand for authentic, handmade, ethically produced goods is rising.

This initiative connects these dots: skills → space → opportunity → income.

🧵 What the Project Will Create
🛠️ Production Shop
A fully equipped workspace where PWDs and women can produce handmade items such as:

Embroidered pieces
Dresses and stitched clothing
Carry bags, wallets, tote bags
Home décor and craft items

🏪 Charity Showroom
A community-driven retail space where these goods are showcased and sold, operating under a sustainable charity model.

Every purchase supports:

✔ GBGM’s free hostels for PWDs ✔ Skill development programs ✔ Flood and emergency relief for vulnerable families ✔ Long-term livelihood generation

Partnerships with local hotels, restaurants, and tourism offices will ensure that GBGM products become a must-have local souvenir for every visitor to Gilgit.

📈 Building on GBGM’s Proven Track Record
Over the past four years, GBGM has:

Trained 45+ women and PWDs in IT, tailoring, and handicrafts
Supported 150+ flood-affected families
Distributed 115 wheelchairs and 97 sewing machines
Launched Gilgit-Baltistan’s first free hostel for PWDs

🌍 A Shop With a Heartbeat
Just as the Oxfam Music Shop personified warmth, memory, and community, our envisioned showroom will personify:

✨ Resilience ✨ Creativity ✨ Inclusion ✨ Self-reliance

Every product will tell a story — not just of craft, but of courage.

🎯 Our Vision
To create a model of social enterprise that can be replicated across Hunza, Ghizer, and Skardu. To transform charity into opportunity. To ensure that persons with disabilities are leaders, not recipients, of change.

🤝 Join Us in Making This Vision a Reality
Whether you’re a donor, a business, a hotel partner, or simply someone who believes in empowerment — your support can help us turn this idea into a beacon of inclusive progress for Gilgit-Baltistan.

Together, we can create a society where every ability counts and every effort leads to collective progress.

If you'd like to collaborate, partner, or learn more, We'd be happy to connect.

An estimated more than 80,000 people live with a significant disability in gilgit baltistan today.

No one understands the needs of persons with disabilities better than they do themselves. To achieve a more inclusive and accessible world, people with disabilities must have a seat at decision-making tables.

Wednesday is the International Day of Persons with Disabilities.
