A cochlear implant is a small, complex electronic device that can help to provide a sense of sound to a person who is profoundly deaf or severely hard-of-hearing. The implant consists of an external portion that sits behind the ear and a second portion that is surgically placed under the skin (see figure).

Tinnitus is the medical term for "hearing" noises in your ears. It occurs when there is no outside source of the sounds.

Tinnitus is often called "ringing in the ears." It may also sound like blowing, roaring, buzzing, hissing, humming, whistling, or sizzling. The noises heard can be soft or loud. The person may even think they're hearing air escaping, water running, the inside of a seashell, or musical notes.

The audiogram is a graph showing the results of a pure-tone hearing test. It will show how loud sounds need to be at different frequencies for you to hear them. The audiogram shows the type, degree, and configuration of hearing loss.

Understanding your child's hearing loss can be confusing, no doubt!

It's important to know that hearing loss is not a one size fits all and each child's hearing loss will affect their ability to hear/learn speech differently depending on their own individual hearing loss.

Often parents will ask "if my child has high frequency hearing loss what sounds are they missing?"

Or "what is an example of a low frequency sound?"

Or "what exactly are the middle pitches?"

First things first.

What is frequency (also known as pitch)?

Think about keys on a piano. The keys range from low bass sounds all the way to high pitch sounds and everything in between.

Your hearing is the same!

Sometimes your hearing loss only impacts a few frequencies (or piano keys) other-times it impacts the entire piano and each piano key is needed to clearly hear the music..

Hearing loss isn't just an "older" person's issue. Recent research shows that symptoms of hearing loss between ages 45 and 65 more than double the chance of dementia later in life.

Hearing loss is not just age-related. Younger people are at risk too, thanks to headphones, earbuds and loud gigs.

Listening to music at maximum volume for long periods can lead to significant hearing loss. Remember that ringing in your ears after a concert? Now imagine it lasting for hours every day.

To protect your hearing, we need to shift the focus to hearing health. Lower the volume, use noise-cancelling headphones, and take care in noisy environments. Avoid excessive drinking of alcohol, smoking, and of course cotton swabs can also help!

Let's spread the word to younger and mid-life generations: Protect your hearing to avoid the profound consequences of hearing loss!
