Extreme Heat: What to Eat? What to Do?
Sunlight! Regulation is Best
📌 Close all doors and windows before the heat intensifies. If heavy curtains are used, the room stays much cooler. Hanging wet cloths on doors and windows will also keep the room cool.
📌 Open doors and windows only when the sun is down.
Cool Dress, Feel Fresh
📌 Always try to wear loose-fitting cotton clothes. Dark-colored clothes absorb sunlight, making you feel hotter. Keep a handkerchief with you and occasionally wipe your face and hands with water. Avoid synthetic clothes entirely in this heat.
Water: No Friend Like It
📌 To keep your body cells active in this unbearable heat, drink at least 3–4 liters of water daily. If you have kidney issues or other illnesses, water intake must be regulated. However, do not drink cold soft drinks or packaged juices to meet your water needs.
Exhausted by Heat! AC Can Be a Threat
📌 To escape the heat, many people enter an AC environment immediately after arriving at a market, office, or home. This can lead to catching a cold. Therefore, wipe your sweat and stand under a fan first to dry off. Enter the AC room only after staying in a normal temperature for a while.
Exercise! Stay Fresh Even in Heat
📌 Exercise or walk only in the early morning or after evening when the environment feels cooler. Walking or exercising in the sun can cause muscle cramps, heatstroke, and various other problems.
Umbrella! Keep the Heat at Bay
📌 Try to walk through the shade. When going out in the sun, use a wide cap, scarf, or an umbrella. If traveling by rickshaw, keep the hood up. Apply sunscreen cream or lotion to your skin.
Fruit Sherbet: A Blessing of Summer
📌 It is now the season of various fruits. Make sherbet with fresh fruits, but avoid adding extra sugar or sweeteners. You can also drink lemon sherbet, saline, aloe vera, basil seeds (tokma), or ispaghula husk.
Street Sherbet: A Potential Hazard
📌 Do not consume colorful drinks, sugarcane juice, or pre-cut watermelon or pineapple from the roadside. These open foods increase the risk of diarrhea, typhoid, and jaundice. Also, avoid store-bought ready-mix sherbets as they contain high levels of preservatives and sugar.
Summer Diet: A Variety of Healthy Options
📌 Do not keep long gaps between meals.
📌 Eat a heavy meal at lunch and keep your dinner light. Include plenty of salad in your meals. You can snack on fresh cucumbers occasionally. Forget about fatty foods, fried items, and oily-spicy dishes entirely.
Smoking! Another Poison in the Heat
📌 If you have a smoking habit, give it up—at least during the summer. Smoking makes the body even hotter. If you have a habit of drinking tea or coffee, try to avoid them during extreme heat as well.
