4th Diabetes Symposium at Isra University on 26th November 2025 at Hotel Indus Hyderabad.
Isra University Hyderabad in collaboration with Pakistan Society of Internal Medicine (PSIM) and Health Zone on the occasion of world diabetes day organized 4th Diabetes Symposium. It was organized by Dr. Sunil Maheshwari, Assistant Professor, Department of Medicine. This is worth to share 1st Diabetes Symposium was organized in 2021 in the history of Hyderabad from the platform of Isra University. The theme of this symposium is “Diabetes is a challenge and insulin is the answer”
The main purpose of this symposium was to bring together clinicians and researchers in an innovative program that includes plenary session and panel discussions as well as oral communication with experts to encourage the integration and participation of young doctors. This symposium addressed the issues related to diabetes including global burden, burden in Pakistan, Challenges in staring insulin therapy, guidelines for dyslipidemia and also focuses on complications of diabetes mellitus.
This program started with the recitation of versus from holy Quran. After National Anthem, a warm welcome to audience followed by review of health zone activities was presented by Dr. Beenish Memon, Consultant Physician, Liaquat University Hospital, Hyderabad. The panel of expert were invited to be seated on distinguished chairs including: Prof. Bikha Ram Devrajani (Vice President, central committee Pakistan society of internal medicine), Prof. Feroz Memon (Vice Chancellor, University of Modern Sciences, Tando Muhammad Khan), Prof. Raheel Sikander (Obstetrician and Gynecologist, Aga khan Hospital, Hyderabad), Prof. Pooran Kumar (Head of Department of Nephrology, Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences, Jamhoro), Dr. Mumtaz Lakho (Associate Professor, Incharge MU-IV, Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences, Jamhoro) and Dr. Sarwat Anjum (Consultant Endocrinologist and Assistant Professor, Ibn-e-Sina University, Mirpurkhas).
The academic session started with the talk on Switching smart, The role of high quality insulin in treatment of diabetes by Dr. Sunil Maheshwari. He elaborated the pathophysiology of diabetes and insulin therapy including indications, dose and shared the data on benefits of early use of insulin in preventing the complications of diabetes mellitus. The next speaker was well known leading cardiologist Dr. Muhammad Kashif Shaikh (Head of Department of Interventional Cardiology, Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences, Jamshoro and Director MKS). Dr. Shaikh shares the guidelines on the management of dyslipidemia and elaborate the role of every drug including new drugs in management of lipid levels. Dr. Hafsa Urooj, consultant physician and Assistant professor, Department of Medicine, Isra University Hyderabad discussed the case scenarios related to autonomic neuropathy- a silent complication of diabetes mellitus. The audience participated in discussion with Dr. Urooj.
Prof. Bikha Ram Devrajani shared the new approaches to treatment of diabetes and described the concept of exogeneous and endogeneous insulin. Prof. Feroz Memon elaborate the dyslipidemia complexities and management with dual statin therapies. Prof. Raheel Sikander emphasized the burden of gestational diabetes and improve the awareness regarding contraception, the only way to prevent gestational diabetes and hyperglycemia in pregnant women. Dr. Pooran Kumar said, if heart involvement is red sign of diabetes than kidney involvement is black sign of diabetes. Good glycemic is the only way to prevent kidney damage. Dr. Mumtaz Lakho discussed the issues about compliance of patients on insulin therapy. Dr. Sarwat Anjum asks all the clinicians to focus on prevention of diabetes by educating the community on life style modification as it is one of the preventable disease. She also mentioned the importance of diabetes education in achieving the glycemic targets by the patients.
Prof. Muhammad Akbar Memon, Department of Medicine, Isra University concluded the session with his insightful remarks and congratulate the organizers. Prof. Salman Kazi, professor of forensic medicine, Isra university thanks the audience on the behalf on administration of isra university Hyderbad.
The shields and souvenirs were distributed among the Panelists and speakers by the dignitaries. The program was well moderated by house officer Dr. Hifza Fatima. SAMI Pharma remained the backbone by sponsoring the whole session.
The session was ended with vote of thanks to audience by faculty members of department of medicine and allied including Prof. Manzoor Ali, Associate professor Dr. Akram Munir, Associate professor Dr. Prem Kumar, Dr. Ghulam Fareed Memon, Dr. Masood Uz Zaman, Dr. Amber Hashif and Dr. Safiyan Ahmed Memon.
The session was attended by the various consultants, general practitioners, postgraduates and house officers from isra university hospital, Liaquat university hospital and Indus Hospital Tando Muhammad khan.
