Importance of Polycystic O***y Syndrome (PCOS) Awareness Month
Polycystic o***y syndrome (PCOS) is a severe genetic, hormone, metabolic and reproductive disorder that affects women and girls. It is the leading cause of female infertility and a precursor for other severe conditions, including obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and endometrial cancer.
PCOS a condition that can cause hormonal imbalances, irregular periods, excess androgen levels and cysts in the ovaries, is a leading cause of infertility. While it is a chronic condition that cannot be cured, it's important to note that some symptoms can be improved through lifestyle changes, medications and fertility treatments. This underscores the significant role that lifestyle adjustments can play in managing PCOS.
Polycystic O***y Syndrome (PCOS) is a significant public health concern and is one of the most common hormonal disorders that impact women of reproductive age. It is estimated to affect 8–13% of women in this age group, and up to 70% of cases go undiagnosed.
The prevalence of PCOS is higher among some ethnicities, and these groups often experience more complications, in particular related to metabolic problems. The biological and psychological effects of PCOS, particularly those related to obesity, body image and infertility, can lead to mental health challenges and social stigma.
