Fasting on the Day of Ashura, the 10th day of Muharram, is highly recommended in Islam.
This act of worship commemorates the events of Karbala and offers a chance for spiritual renewal. It is believed that fasting on Ashura expiates sins and brings immense rewards from Allah.
Additionally, it is Sunnah to fast a day before or after Ashura (9th and 11th Muharram) as well.

A man once asked the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH):
"Which fast is best after Ramadan?"
The Prophet (PBUH) replied,
"The month of Allah, known as Muharram."
