Under the visionary leadership of Vice Chancellor Prof. Ikram Din Ujjan and the support of Dean of Dentistry Prof. Feroz Ali Kalhoro, the Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Institute of Dentistry, LUMHS, successfully conducted simulation-based learning workshop titled “Managing Medical Emergencies in Dental Practice.” Under the supervision of Prof Dr Kashif Ali Channar.
The event opened with Qirat, followed by an inspiring welcome address by Prof. Dr. Muhammad Shahzad, Chairman OMFS, who highlighted the urgent need for structured emergency training in dentistry.
Participants were first assessed through a pre-test, setting the stage for a comprehensive learning journey. The scientific sessions commenced with Dr. Kashif Ali Channar’s lecture on Emergency Toolkit & Common Errors to Avoid, providing practical strategies to prepare for critical situations. This was followed by an insightful session by Dr. Rabia Anis on Communication & Teamwork in Emergencies, emphasizing the importance of coordinated action during crises.
The heart of the workshop lay in its five immersive simulation stations -Syncope/Hypoglycemia, Anaphylaxis, Epilepsy, Chest Pain/ Cardiac Arrest and Asthma. Participants engaged in real-time scenarios with trained actors (OMFS Residents), applying theoretical knowledge to practice. The stations were meticulously facilitated by an expert faculty panel (Prof. Dr. Suneel Kumar, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Shahzad, Dr. Aftab Kumbhar, Dr. Bashir Jalbani, Dr. Vishal, Dr. Ram, Dr. Ali Raza, Prof Dr. Kashif Ali Channar, Dr. Ishrat, Dr. Aneel), ensuring authenticity and constructive feedback.
To measure learning impact, a post-test and structured debriefing session were conducted, reinforcing clinical reasoning, communication skills, and teamwork. The initiative not only improved participants’ competence in emergency response but also built confidence to handle life-threatening situations in dental practice.
Speaking on the occasion, faculty emphasized that this landmark simulation workshop is very significant, setting a precedent for integrating simulation-based learning into dental education. Participants appreciated the hands-on approach and expressed eagerness for future series to expand training in other high-risk areas of dental care. Special thanks were extended to the ,administration LUMHS, organizing committee, actors, volunteers, and the staff of the Skills Lab at the OSPE Centre, whose dedication and support ensured the smooth ex*****on of the workshop.
This workshop reflects the university’s growing commitment to innovation, patient safety, and excellence in dental education.
