Raising awareness about mental illnesses requires collective effort. By understanding the challenges faced by individuals living with these conditions, dispelling stigma, and providing support, we can create a more compassionate and inclusive society. Let's prioritize mental health, encourage open conversations, and work together to ensure that no one faces their struggles alone.

Breaking stigmas associated with mental health can be a complex and ongoing process, but here are some steps you can take to contribute to this important endeavor:

1. Educate yourself: Learn about mental health conditions, their causes, symptoms, and available treatments.

2. Start conversations: Initiate open and non-judgmental conversations about mental health. Encourage friends, family, and colleagues to share their experiences or thoughts and actively listen without judgment.

4. Speak out against stigma: If you witness someone perpetuating harmful stereotypes, myths, or stigmas about mental health, respectfully challenge these beliefs. Use factual information, personal anecdotes, or data to counter their statements. Be patient and understanding while discussing, as change often takes time.

5. Be mindful of language: Use thoughtful and inclusive language when discussing mental health. Avoid derogatory terms or slurs that can contribute to the stigma surrounding mental health conditions. Utilize person-first language, emphasizing the person and not the condition (e.g., "a person with bipolar disorder" instead of "a bipolar person").

6. Support mental health organizations: Contribute to mental health organizations that work towards destigmatizing mental health. Volunteer your time, participate in events, or donate if possible. Mental health organizations often organize awareness campaigns and educational programs, helping to break down stigmas.

8. Promote self-care and seeking help: Encourage self-care practices and emphasize the importance of seeking professional help when needed. Promote the idea that seeking professional support for mental health is a strength, not a weakness.

Remember, breaking stigmas surrounding mental health is an ongoing process that requires collective effort. By taking these steps, you can contribute positively to creating a more understanding and inclusive society.

Addiction is something that can negatively affect multiple areas in someoneโ€™s life. Such as memory, motivation, family, and more. Some people may say that addiction lies inside of a personโ€™s character.

If they were to have even just a single sip of an alcoholic beverage, they would become addicted. However, addiction is a lot more than just a personโ€™s character.

Itโ€™s a lot more complex in the brain. Drug addiction is a chronic brain disorder according to the American Psychological Association.

The way the addiction cycle works is it is created by a change in the brains chemistry. However, this doesnโ€™t happen quickly.

This occurs throughout different stages. These stages can be short time frames or even months or years to develop.

Coping skills are the tactics that people use to deal with stressful situations. Managing your stress well can help you feel better physically and psychologically and impact your ability to perform your best.

But not all coping skills are created equal. Sometimes, itโ€™s tempting to engage in strategies that will give quick relief but might create bigger problems for you down the road. Itโ€™s important to establish healthy coping skills that will help you reduce your emotional distress or rid yourself of the stressful situations you face.

Coping skills help you tolerate, minimize, and deal with stressful situations in life.

Two of the main types of coping skills are problem-based coping and emotion-based coping. Understanding how they differ can help you determine the best coping strategy for you.

Problem-based coping is helpful when you need to change your situation, perhaps by removing a stressful thing from your life. For example, if youโ€™re in an unhealthy relationship, your anxiety and sadness might be best resolved by ending the relationship (as opposed to soothing your emotions).

Emotion-based coping is helpful when you need to take care of your feelings when you either donโ€™t want to change your situation or when circumstances are out of your control. For example, if you are grieving the loss of a loved one, itโ€™d be important to take care of your feelings in a healthy way (since you canโ€™t change the circumstance).
There isnโ€™t always one best way to proceed.

Instead, itโ€™s up to you to decide which type of coping skill is likely to work best for you in your particular circumstance.

21/12/2022

Self-harm is a response to emotional or psychological discomfort. When the stress or discomfort becomes too much to bear, the person turns to cutting as a method of coping. Ultimately, self-harm behaviors are a coping mechanism, a destructive and dangerous one, but they are an attempt at emotional regulation.

Those that suffer from self-harm often feel intense shame and embarrassment about their behaviors. They may go to great length to hide their scars or fresh wounds and those around them may have no idea that they are hurting themselves. However, it is not an uncommon condition, approximately 2 million cases are reported annually.

The behavior usually occurs in adolescents or young adults and can last through the teenage years and early adulthood. It is important to not make an individual feel embarrassed or ashamed of the behavior, while also avoiding normalizing or trivializing it.

It is often done by cutting with a knife or razor, burning, picking or tearing, pulling hairs, eyebrows/eyelashes, and excessive Substance Use.

If you are the one or know someone who is suffering from these behaviors, it's time to help them.
