OIC-COMSTECH Organized International Workshop on “Metabolomics – An AI of Diagnostic Testing”

Islamabad, October 7, 2025 – The OIC Standing Committee on Scientific and Technological Cooperation (COMSTECH) organized an international workshop on “Metabolomics – an AI of Diagnostic Testing.”

The event aimed to highlight the emerging role of metabolomics and artificial intelligence (AI) in revolutionizing diagnostic sciences. More than 200 participants from different regions of the world joined the workshop, both physically and virtually.

Prof. Dr. M. Iqbal Choudhary, Coordinator General COMSTECH, inaugurated the session and welcomed participants and the distinguished speaker. In his address, he emphasized the growing importance of AI integration across scientific disciplines, particularly in the biomedical field, where it is transforming research, diagnosis, and healthcare delivery.

The keynote lecture was delivered by Mr. Javed Iqbal Khan, a distinguished Forensic Scientist and Biochemist with over three decades of professional experience in the United States.
Mr. Khan holds dual Master of Science degrees in Biochemistry/Molecular Biology from the University of California, Riverside (1994), and in Biochemistry (major) with Microbiology (minor) from the University of Agriculture, Faisalabad (1982). He has served as a Forensic Scientist at the California State Department of Justice, testified in over 500 cases in Federal, State, and Local Courts, and currently works as a Scientific and Forensic Assessment Consultant with the Attorney Information Exchange Group (AIEG) and the Utah State Attorney General’s Office.

In his detailed lecture, Mr. Khan introduced participants to the principles of metabolomics, describing it as a vital component of precision diagnostics. He explained that only 7% of cancers are hereditary, with the majority resulting from environmental and lifestyle factors. Using the “Pyramid of Life” model, he illustrated how genomics, proteomics, and metabolomics are interconnected layers of biological understanding, with metabolomics representing the most dynamic and functional level influenced by diet, environment, and physiology.

He further elaborated on how AI-powered metabolomic analysis is enabling earlier disease detection, personalized treatment planning, and improved clinical outcomes through data-driven precision medicine.

During the interactive question-and-answer session, participants discussed the integration of AI and metabolomics into diagnostic research, data interpretation, and healthcare systems.

In his concluding remarks, Dr. Ismalia Diallo,
COMSTECH Regional Advisor for OIC-Africa
summarized that the presentation provided a deeper understanding of the role and importance of metabolomics in diagnosing and treating diseases such as cancer. He highlighted that the lecture also shed light on the impact of the environment and diet on disease onset.
The workshop concluded with closing acknowledgments and a networking hi-tea session.

OIC- COMSTECH, HealthRAB hold workshop on clinical research in resource-constrained environments.

OIC- COMSTECH, in collaboration with the Health Research Advisory Board (HealthRAB) and Institute of Innovation Leadership in Medicine & Management on Tuesday organized an international workshop on Clinical Research in Resource-Constrained Environments at its Secretariat in Islamabad.

The workshop aimed to train healthcare professionals and researchers in conducting clinical research in low-resource settings, identifying training needs, and establishing clinical research centres within their institutions.

In his message, Coordinator General OIC- COMSTECH Prof Dr M. Iqbal Choudhary welcomed participants and stressed the importance of collaboration. He noted that healthcare providers and researchers in many OIC member states face limited infrastructure, funding shortages, and a lack of trained personnel. “These same constraints make innovation, ingenuity, and capacity building more essential than ever,” he said.

Prof Dr Abdul Basit, Chairman HealthRAB, in his address underlined the pressing need for institutional capacity in clinical research. He emphasised that resource limitations should not become barriers to quality healthcare and evidence-based practice. “Even in constrained environments, we can build centres of excellence through collaboration, commitment, and innovation,” he remarked.

Prof Dr Zakiuddin Ahmed , General Secretary HealthRAB, introduced HealthRAB’s mission and said the organisation, in collaboration with COMSTECH, would continue to organise workshops and conferences to build healthcare leadership and research capacity.

The programme included group activities, discussions on establishing research centres in resource-constrained settings, and an interactive session.

A panel discussion on developing a health research ecosystem through collaboration featured **Dr Samina Naeem Khalid**, Professor and Researcher at the Health Services Academy Islamabad.

The workshop concluded with a vote of thanks, with participants both in person and online appreciating the initiative and its practical insights for advancing clinical research in challenging environments.
