Dentistry isn’t as glamorous as many people think. It’s a career that is both mentally and physically demanding. Some days, I come home completely drained and just want to be alone, with no energy to socialize or talk. It can be a lonely and isolating profession, which is why having a strong support circle and network early on is absolutely crucial.
I’ve learned more in my first year of practice and hospital work than I did in five years of dental school. One of the biggest lessons is that dentistry is less about just fixing teeth and more about managing patients ,something dental school doesn’t fully prepare you for. Discussing treatment costs can be uncomfortable, but it’s an essential skill you must develop, even though it’s rarely taught during training.
Dental school often focuses on perfect procedures on extracted or plastic teeth, but in reality, no tooth is ever that ideal. Being adaptable and practical is key.
If you want to pursue dentistry, be ready for the challenges ahead, and build your support system early. The experience will shape you in ways you can’t foresee. All the best !!!
