Rib fractures during CPR can happen and they can be a sign of effective chest compressions.
High-quality CPR requires pushing hard and deep, and that force can sometimes cause rib fractures. While this may sound alarming, broken ribs are a known and acceptable consequence when providing lifesaving compressions. The priority in cardiac arrest is restoring blood flow and giving the person a chance to survive.
Many people hesitate to perform CPR out of fear of “doing harm.” But in cardiac arrest, doing nothing is far more dangerous. Effective compressions save lives even if they may cause injury.
BLS training helps you understand what to expect, respond with confidence, and act without hesitation in an emergency. Knowing this can turn fear into action when every second matters.
