Our teenyboppers support group offers a holistic support for our kids that involves awareness around their psychosocial health through compassionate conversations and yoga.

We are ecstatic to present an opportunity for our younglings to be a part of a support group that gives them the platform to be heard and understood.

This month’s support group was on “bullying”.

The 1st was Awareness Circle. As the name suggests, the facilitator shared how a bully make look or feel like and how a person can prevent it, or seek right kind of help both socially and legally.
The 2nd circle was to provide a safe space for the kids to feel ease in sharing their emotions and experiences around bulling.

The gated wall in the picture above stands as a metaphor for the defences we build and the boundaries we create in our relationships.
Defences: to block anything and everything that is harmful to our emotional, mental or physical being which helps us to survive in difficult situations.
Boundaries: to filter and choose what enters in our life depending upon our values, comfort, and respect.

Creating healthy boundaries in-between relationships is of the utmost importance. These boundaries are unique to every relationship and are built on mutual understanding, and respect of one another, by communicating our needs and limits to each other. It is a realisation where both parties feel that their mental/emotional/physical well-being is cared for.
.
On the other hand, our defences are built when our physical, mental and emotional well-being is negatively effected by a friend/family member or our significant other. Building defences is a core survival technique during a specific time period. These are built during difficult situations which in result block our emotions. If these defences are not addressed then they take the form of a behavioural pattern which effects our current/future relationships. It is extremely important to put these barriers down and relax our defences in order to experience normal healthy relationships.

Inner child support group, where attendees shared their personal experiences that left an impact on their lives. Common experiences, concerns and coping mechanisms were shared among the participants. These discussions turned out to be cathartic for all where everyone left with a better understanding and learning of themselves and their situations.

Individuation vs. Individualism

When we experience emotions that are difficult for us to comprehend, we are told to "just sit with it". However, this mainstream instruction phrase does not help the person who is experiencing the complexity of being human due to the vagueness of the said expression.

So,
What does it mean to sit with the complex emotions?
How do you navigate through these emotions?

Before we understand how to sit with our emotions, let's learn the difference between feelings and emotions. Emotions are abstract, and we bring them to life when we feel them.

Our emotions come to us involuntarily that often makes us feel like a victim. Let's say, you wake up one day and feel anxious. You stress over it's presence and go about your day while it hovers above you. You feel attacked, and vulnerable all day.

Feelings on the other hand are voluntary and have a valuable function of their own. Let's say, you spent the day with anxiety hovering above you, making you miserable and vulnerable, so you, voluntarily, decide to let it come to you. You treat it like an univited guests, who leaves you with no option but to invite them inside. This act of acceptance of our emotion allows us to feel this anxiety in order to get some understanding, healing and answers.

Once, we welcome our emotions, we allow ourselves to feel these feelings and understand their transience nature. Sitting with it requires us to accept the unwanted, uncomfortable emotions and let them flow through us. And while doing so, we won't just be able to get some emotional discipline but also learn how to cope with the unwanted emotions.

Academic burnout in school going children or otherwise is a reality but often ignored by the adults. The Study of Academic Burnout in Students (Zeinab Rahmati, 2015) says that burnout in students usually happen during their learning processes due to the course stress, academic responsibilities, which is exhibited through their behaviours and results in low energy, chronic fatigue, depersonalization, emotional exhaustion, absenteeism, reduced productivity, headaches, insomnia and many more. These behaviours are indicators of mental distress i.e. anxiety, frustration, depression, hostility, suicidal thoughts, or fear.

Once the burnout symptoms are identified in an individual or you find yourself in a burntout condition, do not ignore it as it worsens over time. Acknowledge your burnout and seek help from your immediate family, friends, or a mental health counselor. It will help you recognise your burnout symptoms, and will assist you with making reasonable goals, how to battle procrastination, importance of short breaks, and most importantly will teach you stress management through self-reliance/self-awareness.

Men in our society are shamed for being human, which stops them from displaying any emotion that is not welcomed in the society. In order to be accepted they put on a mask to hide the internal conflicts they go throug. They are aware of the fact that a man who has fears, and expresses his emotions is deemed weak. In pursuit of this strong man, a man works hard to maintain a persona which follows the "masculinity" chart the society. Keeping up with this persona creates an internal rift that leads to poor psychosocial health i.e. depression, anger issues, drug abuse, insomnia, and anxiety.

We have to collectively work towards changing the narrative around men and their perceived masculinity by acknowledging them as who they are, for them to freed themselves of the burden of their unexpressed emotions.

For the longest time, men in our society have been dismissed for simply being human. They have been told over and over again to uphold their "masculinity" by keeping up with the socio-cultural standards. And while many men succeed in keeping up with the facade, it is nevertheless detrimental for their psychosocial health which ultimately shows itself in the form of anxiety, stress, loneliness, depression, and often times su***de.
.
It is safe to say that the problem lies in the constant criticism around stereotypes that the world has built specifically for men, and it's ironic that these ideas negate their individuality. We have engendered them in a way that fails to see them as individuals who have emotions too. Considering that, it's incumbent upon all of us to disrupt such stereotypical norms and phenomenon, and build a narrative where men feel validated for their mental and emotional pressures.
