November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month: a reminder to pay attention to our lung health and recognise when something doesn’t feel right.
In Pakistan, lung cancer is one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers. The primary risk factor associated with the development of lung cancer is to***co smoking, which accounts for approximately 85% of all reported cases globally. Signs and symptoms like persistent coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, chest pain, a change in voice, and recurring pneumonia can indicate underlying issues.
The only recommended screening tool for lung cancer is low-dose CT. For high-risk individuals (e.g., long-term smokers aged 40 and above with ≥20 pack-years history), annual low-dose CT (LDCT) screening is recommended and can detect lung cancer early, significantly improving survival rates.
Let’s raise awareness by learning more about lung health, avoiding to***co, encouraging early detection through screening in high-risk groups, and supporting others to do the same. Together, we can take steps toward healthier lives.
