Fatty liver, also known as hepatic steatosis, is a condition characterized by the accumulation of excess fat in liver cells. Normally, the liver contains a small amount of fat, but when fat makes up 5-10% or more of the liver's weight, it is considered fatty liver. This condition can range from mild, where fat accumulates without causing significant damage, to more severe, where it leads to inflammation and potential scarring of the liver (fibrosis or cirrhosis).
