Preventive Measures for Cold and Dry Weather

Cold and dry weather affects health, skin, and daily routines, so it is important to adopt comprehensive preventive measures. Below are detailed guidelines:

1. Skin care

* Apply body lotion or moisturizer immediately after bathing to lock in moisture.
* Use lip balm or petroleum jelly regularly to prevent chapped lips.
* If your skin is very dry, apply a night cream or petroleum jelly before sleeping.

2. Adequate water and fluid intake

* You may feel less thirsty in winter, but your body still needs proper hydration. Drink 8 to 10 glasses of water or warm beverages daily.
* Reduce caffeinated drinks, as they may cause further dehydration.

3. Clothing and protective wear

* Wear layered, warm clothing to maintain body temperature.
* Keep your hands, feet, and ears covered with gloves, warm socks, and a cap.
* Use a windproof jacket when going out in strong cold wind.

4. Indoor humidity control

* Use a humidifier to reduce dryness in indoor air.
* If a humidifier is not available, place bowls of warm water in rooms to naturally increase humidity.

5. Protection from viral infections

* Winter increases the likelihood of flu, cold, and cough, so wash your hands frequently.
* Wear a mask in crowded places.
* Use a tissue while coughing or sneezing and dispose of it immediately.

6. Nutrition and immunity

* Consume seasonal fruits like oranges, kinnow, and pomegranates, along with fresh vegetables.
* Include almonds, walnuts, honey, ginger, and warm broths in your diet to boost immunity and maintain body warmth.
* Soups and bone broths are excellent energy sources during cold weather.

7. Physical activity

* Laziness increases in winter, so maintain light exercise or daily walking.
* Exercise improves blood circulation and helps maintain body heat.

8. Special care for elders and children

* Elderly people and young children are more vulnerable to cold; ensure they stay warm and well-covered.
* Individuals with asthma or allergies should use masks outdoors and carry necessary medications.

9. Bathing routine

* Very hot water dries the skin further; use lukewarm water instead.
* Always moisturize immediately after bathing.

These preventive steps help you stay healthy, comfortable, and protected during cold and dry weather.

What is the best time to have a lipid profile test? Do I need to be on an empty stomach?

Answer:
A lipid profile test is usually done in the morning after fasting for 9–12 hours. Fasting means no food or drinks except water, because eating before the test can temporarily change the level of fats (especially triglycerides) in your blood. However, in many cases, doctors may allow a non-fasting test, especially if it’s for routine screening and you do not have high triglycerides, diabetes, or heart-related risks.

In short:

Ideal time: Morning
Fasting required: Yes, 9–12 hours, unless your doctor advises a non-fasting test.

Tip: You can drink water, but avoid tea, coffee, juice, or any food during the fasting period.

What is a Lipid Profile?

A lipid profile is a test that measures the levels of different fats in our blood. It mainly measures four components:
Total Cholesterol
Triglycerides
LDL (bad cholesterol)
HDL (good cholesterol)

LDL and triglycerides are fats that can build up in blood vessels and narrow their passage. This reduces blood flow to the heart and increases the risk of a heart attack.

HDL, on the other hand, cleans the fat deposits inside the blood vessels and carries them to the liver, where they are eliminated. That is why it is called good cholesterol.

For a healthy life, HDL should be high and LDL should be low. The simplest way to achieve this is daily walking.

Benefits of walking:
Increases HDL
Reduces LDL and triglycerides
Keeps blood vessels clear
Improves blood circulation
Protects the heart from diseases

If the heart stays healthy, you stay healthy. So, make walking a daily habit.

Reduce the intake of:
Salt
Sugar
Refined flour
Dairy products
Processed foods

Include daily:
Vegetables, lentils, beans
Nuts
Fruits

Adopt:
Positive mindset
Regular exercise
Weight control
Adequate water and proper sleep
