🗣 | Minister of Foreign Affairs of 🇨🇺, Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla: We appeal to the people of the United States to stop the aggression against 🇻🇪

🔵 The exaggerated and aggressive military presence of the United States in the region constitutes a threat against Latin America and the Caribbean as a whole.

🔵 With the encouragement of the Secretary of State, the main and immediate target is the violent overthrow of the government of Venezuela through the use of U.S. military force, an extremely dangerous and irresponsible action with unpredictable and incalculable consequences.

🔵 Given the manifest degree of threat, this constitutes a violation of International Law and the Charter of the United Nations.

🔵 With a military escalation, an international crime of the highest order would be committed.

🔵 This aggression responds to a warlike objective that is not shared by the majority of the people of the United States.

🔵 The pretext of combating illegal narcotics trafficking is an unsustainable lie.

🔵 Such a concentration of naval assets—so large and sophisticated, with such destructive volume and firepower—is not deployed to fight criminal organizations.

🔵 The U.S. government could cause an incalculable number of deaths and create a scenario of violence and instability in the hemisphere that would be unimaginable.

🔵 The threat of war does not solve any of the domestic political and economic problems of the United States; it moves away the possibilities of a constructive relationship and understanding in the region, while proving to new generations the old distrust of Latin American and Caribbean peoples about the ambitions of the powerful neighbor of the North.

🔵 Cuba 🇨🇺 denounces this military escalation in the strongest possible terms and reaffirms its full support to Venezuela .

🔵 We also appeal to common sense, solidarity, spirit of peace and ethics of the international community.

🔵 We appeal to the people of the United States to stop this madness.

As we commemorate today, October 28th, the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Republic of Cuba and the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, we are pleased to share with our friends some of the most significant moments of these seven decades:

• October 28th, 1955: Establishment of diplomatic relations through an exchange of notes at the respective representations at the United Nations headquarters in New York. Pakistan was the first country in South Asia with which Cuba established official ties. In turn, the island was the third nation in Latin America and the Caribbean to recognize the Islamic Republic.

• June 1959: Commander Ernesto “Che” Guevara, then president of the National Bank of Cuba, visited Karachi, where he met with President Mohammed Ayub Khan and other senior officials. It was the first high-level official Cuban visit to Pakistan and a symbol of revolutionary Cuba's interest in Asia and the Third World.

• June 1963: Cuba became the second country in Latin America and the Caribbean to open an embassy in Pakistan. The first Cuban diplomatic headquarters was inaugurated in Karachi.

• September 3rd, 1979: President Zia Ul Haq travels to Havana, leading his country's delegation to the Sixth Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement. He is received by Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro, with whom he holds official talks. It was the first high-level official visit by a Pakistani head of state to Cuba and Latin America.

• October 14th, 2005: Following a personal call from President Pervez Musharraf to Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro, Cuba sends the first group of doctors from the Henry Reeve contingent to assist the victims of the October 8th earthquake. Over a period of seven months, our country deployed more than 2,400 doctors and paramedical personnel, set up 32 field hospitals and two aid camps, carried out dozens of transport flights, and sent hundreds of tons of medicines and medical equipment. During that period, our aid workers treated more than 1.7 million patients, performed 14,506 surgical operations, many of them complex, and more than 166,000 people received specialized rehabilitation services. The last group of the brigade returned to Cuba on May 25th, 2006.

• July 17th, 2006: Cuba officially reopens its embassy in Islamabad after a fifteen-year hiatus following the closure of its last diplomatic mission in 1991.

• September 14th-17th, 2006: President Pervez Musharraf leads the Pakistani delegation to the 14th Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement in Havana. During his official visit, he was received by Army General Raúl Castro Ruz and presided over the ceremony to award medals to a representation of Cuban doctors who participated in providing assistance to Pakistan after the earthquake of October 8th, 2005.

• February 2007: The first young Pakistanis arrive in Cuba as part of the program to award 1,000 scholarships to study medicine at the Latin American School of Medicine (ELAM), conceived and promoted by Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro. From that date until 2017, 965 new Pakistani doctors graduated from Cuban classrooms. Educational cooperation has continued to the present day.

• March 2007: Pakistan opens its first embassy in Havana.

• March 23th, 2008: The government of Pakistan posthumously awards its highest honor, the Nisham-e-Pakistan, to Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro for his contribution to the development of bilateral relations and in recognition of Cuba's solidarity and assistance after the October 2005 earthquake.

• July 29th, 2015: First graduation of Pakistani doctors in Cuba as part of the program of 1,000 scholarships offered by the island's government in 2006.

• December 23rd, 2015: In an official statement, the Pakistani Ministry of Foreign Affairs announces that Pakistan will donate 15,000 tons of rice to the Cuban people to mark the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries and as a contribution to help repair the damage caused to the island by various natural disasters.

• June 2nd, 2022: Pakistan officially announced the delivery of a donation of mechanical ventilators, medicines, and personal protective equipment to the Cuban health system as a gesture of cooperation during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In the High-Level Segment of the 80th UNGA, expressions of support for Cuba and rejection of the illegal, unjust, and genocidal blockade imposed by the United States against our country continue. This blockade has been intensified over the last eight years with additional measures aimed at depriving the Cuban people of food, medicine, energy resources, and other supplies. The blockade against Cuba must end.

Fidel Castro and Pakistan: a legacy that transcends time and distance.
August 13, 2025 marks the 99th anniversary of the birth of Fidel Castro, an emblematic figure of the Cuban Revolution and a symbol of anti-imperialist resistance. Although Cuba and Pakistan are thousands of miles apart, their bilateral relationship has been marked by gestures of solidarity and cooperation in which the Commander-in-Chief's influence has been decisive. His memory lives on in Pakistan as the moral architect of a bond guided by the values of sovereignty, equality, and mutual non-intervention, and cemented by concrete examples of selfless aid and active diplomacy.
Diplomatic relations between the two countries were established on October 28, 1955. In the 1960s, embassies were opened in Havana and Islamabad, but economic constraints led to their closure in 1968 and again in 1990. However, the devastating earthquake in Kashmir in October 2005 marked a turning point: Cuba, under Fidel's leadership, was one of the first countries to offer humanitarian aid, sending medical brigades and field hospitals to the most affected areas, in a gesture that generated deep gratitude in Pakistani society.
The scale of that aid was extraordinary. More than 2,700 Cuban health professionals were deployed to Pakistan, treating hundreds of thousands of patients. Between October 2005 and May 2006, more than two million consultations and thousands of surgical procedures were performed. The Pakistani authorities publicly acknowledged that Cuba's contribution would always be remembered, emphasizing that this solidarity transcended the emergency situation to become a pillar of mutual trust.
Fidel Castro also promoted educational cooperation as a way to strengthen long-term bilateral relations. More than 900 young Pakistanis received scholarships to train as doctors at Cuban universities, many of whom now work in the local health system. These initiatives were accompanied by cultural exchanges and high-level visits, during which Pakistani diplomats highlighted the special esteem in which their people hold the Cuban leader and the humanist vision that inspired these actions.
Beyond the specific facts, Fidel Castro stands as a figure of reference for progressive sectors in Pakistan, who see him as an example of resistance to imperialism and commitment to social justice. Although the realities of both countries are very different, his legacy continues to offer keys to thinking about a more balanced and supportive international order. Almost a century after his birth, the Commander-in-Chief's mark on relations between Cuba and Pakistan remains alive, reminding us that diplomacy can also be forged through empathy and commitment to human dignity.

In the year of the 70th anniversary of the establishment of bilateral relations and the 20th anniversary of the arrival of the Henry Reeve Brigade in Pakistan, it was a pleasure to welcome Muhammad Irfan, Ali Murrad and Ali Ahmad, three young men who will begin their medical studies in Cuba in September . Coming from the districts of Vehari, Jatoi and Shujabad, they will join ten other students from their country in Cuban classrooms. Even in the most difficult times, does not hesitate to extend its hand of solidarity to its brothers in the South.

CUBA-PAKISTAN, NOTES FOR 70th (I): HISTORY.

Islamabad, May 6, 2025._Although separated by thousands of kilometers and distinct cultural differences, Cuba and Pakistan have forged a solid and stable bilateral relationship over the decades.

Few know that the island was just the third Latin American country
to establish full diplomatic ties with the Islamic Republic on October 28, 1955, in an international context marked by the rise of the Cold War and the confrontation between antagonistic ideological camps.

Barely four years after the formal beginning of the relations, one of the most symbolic moments in the bilateral history took place, with the visit of Ernesto "Che" Guevara to Pakistan in 1959. There he met with the then President Ayub Khan, visited industrial facilities and scientific institutes and observed the political reality of the country. His visit, although brief and discreetly treated by the local press, left a lasting impression in intellectual circles and in regions such as Balochistan, where Che continues to be an admired figure. Less known is his second stay in 1965, when he made a 24-hour stopover in the city of Karachi in which, although no official activities were organized, he did have the opportunity to share with local politicians and personalities.

In the 1970s and 1980s, the Non-Aligned Movement provided a common space for interaction and exchanges between the two countries, driven by the spirit of Bandung and the common interest in the promotion of sovereignty and independent development. It is little known that General Zia ul-Haq, as head of state, led the Pakistani delegation to the 14th NAM Summit held in Havana in September 1979, where he was received by Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro, with whom he had a lively and fluid dialogue.

After the temporary hiatus caused by the convulsive geopolitical changes of the last decade of the 20th century and the first years of the 21st century, Cuban-Pakistani relations experienced what is still, up to the moment, their highest point. After the devastating earthquake that devastated the northeast of Pakistan on October 8, 2005 and in an unprecedented act, Cuba sent more than 2,400 doctors and health workers to Pakistan, who attended to more than one million people in the affected areas. This gesture of solidarity, deeply appreciated by the Pakistani society and government, was followed by the offer of a thousand scholarships to young Pakistanis to study medicine at Cuba. Many of these doctors are now serving in marginalized communities in Pakistan, a lasting legacy of cooperation between the two countries.

In a world dominated by strategic alliances based on economic or military interests, the historic link between Cuba and Pakistan is an example that the principles of cooperation and humanitarian aid continue to occupy a central place in international diplomacy.

Note: This is the first in a series of eight articles to be published on the social networks of the Cuban Embassy in Pakistan as part of the commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations on October 28.
