Alopecia areata is an autoimmune disease that causes the body to attack its own hair follicles, leading to patchy hair loss — sometimes on the scalp, sometimes on the face or body. It can happen to anyone, at any age, and often without warning.
It’s not contagious. It’s not caused by stress alone. And it’s not a reflection of health, hygiene, or strength.
What is real is the emotional impact. Hair loss can affect confidence, identity, and mental well-being — and those feelings deserve to be acknowledged, not minimized.
Some people experience regrowth. Some don’t. Some choose treatment, others don’t. Some wear wigs, scarves, or nothing at all. Every choice is valid.
Alopecia areata is a medical condition — but the people living with it are so much more than a diagnosis. Let’s replace stigma with understanding, and silence with support.
