Definition:
A condition where the umbilical cord becomes wrapped around the fetal neck one or more times.
Incidence:
Fairly common; occurs in about 20–30% of term deliveries.
Types:
Single loop – most common and usually loose.
Multiple loops – may be tight and associated with complications.
Clinical Significance:
Most cases do not cause harm.
Can sometimes lead to reduced blood flow, fetal distress, or abnormal heart rate patterns during labor if the cord is tight.
