People who constantly feel unhappy may be stuck in common behavior patterns that prevent them from feeling satisfied.

These four behaviors affect the perception of who we are, where we are, and what we have.

By identifying these behaviors, we can take steps to learn new perspectives and coping skills to experience greater life satisfaction.

anxiety can be a controlling presence in our lives. It can fill our minds with threatening thoughts and shrink our worlds as we try to avoid the danger we see everywhere. Without realizing it, we can allow anxiety to dominate every part of our day.
With deliberate practice, a person can shift their anxious thoughts and start to think more realistically.

Facing fears slowly and gradually helps break the habit of avoiding uncomfortable situations.

Effective anxiety management includes accepting that one is anxious and then redirecting to something more important than the anxiety.

The trap of always wanting more is that you may undermine the very achievements you had worked so hard to attain.

It is impossible to appreciate what you have when you are constantly sprinting toward the next goal.

Maintaining a broad perspective of who you are can help you integrate competing roles.

The impetus needed to stay on task links primarily to the discomfort experienced until our goals are met.

Feeling uncomfortable about doing something or persevering when you run into a snag isn’t enough to justify quitting or procrastinating.

It’s essential to avoid distractions that keep us from completing plans that would enable us to reach goals we decided are important.

Boredom is ubiquitous. It’s part of living and being human. When we’re bored we feel sluggish, uninspired, weary, or apathetic. Boredom can be emotionally painful. But more often than not chronic boredom that doesn’t go away isn’t just a benign or normal state of being but rather a symptom of a much deeper issue like unresolved anger, powerlessness, depression, grief, anxiety, or feelings around lacking purpose and meaning in one’s life.

It’s not past experience that keeps people stuck but the habits developed to cope with it. By Noam Shpancer.

Negative events echo loudly inside our psychic architecture. The reason is evolutionary. If a tiger attacked you in the forest, you’d do better, survival-wise, not to forget about it, lest you venture again into the forest unprepared. In addition, our brain has evolved to seek order in the environment to make sense of things because we’re less vulnerable if we understand what’s going on. Adverse events disrupt the existing order, introducing an element of chaos and senselessness. Our brain is compelled to return to the site of the trauma to try to “solve the case,” piece together the narrative, and restore order to the world.

Little wonder, then, that people find moving on from past adversity difficult. Or that therapists often seek to help clients deal with current troubles by relating them back to early distress. Attributing current difficulties to past trauma restores order to the narrative, providing a reassuring clarity.

Self-connection has three components. These consist of self-awareness, self-acceptance, and self-alignment.

• Self-awareness: Awareness of one’s internal experiences, thoughts, emotions, sensations, preferences, values, intuitions, resources, goals, etc.

• Self-acceptance: Full acknowledgment and acceptance, without judgment, of self-relevant characteristics and experiences. And seeing them as part of us and belonging to us.

• Self-alignment: Using self-knowledge to behave in ways that authentically reflect oneself and fulfill one’s psychological needs (e.g., autonomy).

Do you obsess and worry all the time? Struggle to make even small decisions? Are you self-critical? Feel easily distracted and unable to focus?

Too many of us live in our heads all that time. The fact that our mind is constantly producing thoughts isn't necessarily the problem—this is what our minds do. The problem arises when we feel we have no control, when our minds are like a runaway horse that we barely hold on to; we often only go where the horse takes us.

Anxiety is the driver here. But while for some, anxiety is a felt physical experience—heart palpitations, stomach-churning—for many of us, it is about that swirling mind. Like the somatic symptoms, the effects can come in several forms. Here are the most common ones:
•You're constantly worrying
•You struggle to make decisions
•You are perfectionistic
•You're controlling

the tendency to seek out or interpret evidence in such a way that supports our own strongly-held beliefs or expectations. This means, given access to the same set of data and information, different people can come to wildly differing conclusions.

Feeding into confirmation bias can lead us to make ill-informed choices or even reinforce negative stereotypes. For this reason, it is important to remember to seek out information that both confirms and contradicts your presumptions.
