Exhale longer than or equal to your inhale.

And for a bonus, notice the parts of your body that move while you breathe.

Deep breathing in this way promotes mindfulness and calmness, which are useful for letting things be and going to sleep. ❤️

Did you know that not allowing your body an adequate amount of sleep per night can result in serious adverse health consequences on your body?

You heard me right! Weight gain, obesity, HTN, heart disease, stroke, depression, lowered immune response, increased risk of accidents during the day... The list goes on and on!

Your sleep is important and should not have to take a hit so you can get more screen time in.

Oh the perks of being an adult!

For most adults eight hours of sleep per night is a great rule of thumb, but that number can change depending on your age range.

Adolescents, school age children, and toddlers/infants may need more rest due to their bodies and mind constantly changing and growing.

With that being said, don't sacrifice too much of your sleep as a parent; your body and mind need time to decompress each night for a fresh start to the next day!

Snoring reflects some degree of air passage trouble.

While people are used to the sound and commonality of snoring, the truth is that snoring is not normal. In some cases it may be a significant enough problem to affect sleep quality and/or oxygen levels.

Imagine a garden hose; if the water is running through it, then it is working as expected. However, if you pinch the hose the volume of water will decrease and the flow may even stop altogether, which is problematic. This is what happens with your airways when you have sleep apnea.

Snoring is a symptom of a larger, deeper, and much more dangerous problem that can lead to a shortened lifespan, so listen to your body's alarm and seek medical attention.

Sleep paralysis is commonly associated with panicky feelings and fearful imagery or some supernatural, otherworldly event involving ghosts, monsters, or extraterrestrials.

Sleep paralysis may include fear-inducing hallucinations that make the experience seem supernatural or threatening. These may be in the form of sounds, sights, scents, or feelings.

During deep REM sleep, there is a brief period where the body loses muscle control to prevent the acting out of dreams. This period typically ends before the person wakes, so they are never aware of their inability to move.

However, this isn’t always the case. When the person wakes abruptly, there may be a disconnect between fully waking up and the end of REM sleep, resulting in the mixed state of consciousness we call sleep paralysis.

People with obstructive sleep apnea experience this phenomenon at higher rates than those without.

The mind is the function of the structure of the brain, or how the brain works.

One example of function of the brain would be an overly active mind, both mentally and physically reckless and restless, also known as manic. When the brain is in overdrive, chemicals are produced to keep the body active and prolong what the mind is doing.

Similar to ingesting a caffeinated beverage, the effects last for hours rather than just a few minutes since chemicals in the body can’t dissipate that fast. The mind is how your brain works.

If you make a conscious effort to get eight hours of sleep each night and still find yourself having excessive daytime sleepiness, there could be a few things going on while you are sleeping.

It could be a sign that your sleep quality is poor which means that no matter the amount of time spent in bed you can wake up fatigued. Getting a sleep medicine consult and a sleep study to test for things like sleep apnea, nocturnal leg movements, and getting an accurate picture of your sleep architecture/staging is important.

A busy mind/anxiety/stress can also play a factor and if that applies to you sleep meditation practice can be helpful. Assuming you are an adult, 8 hours should be plenty of sleep in most cases if it is good quality sleep.

How many of us immediately check our cellular devices upon waking up? 🙋

Waking up and immediately turning over to check your phone could affect your day without you even knowing it. If you're looking at all of those new messages and notifications as soon as you wake up, this could trigger an overwhelming response in your brain and increase your stress levels for the rest of the day. You are also subconsciously reacting to other people's posts, or even your own portfolio which sets a distracted tone for the remainder of the day. 📱

Instead, try starting your day with some yoga, journaling, or meditation ☀️

There's two types of people in this world -- we have the responsible individuals who set one single alarm, and then we have everybody else who sets five different alarms and still cannot get up.

While you may think those extra 20 minutes of rest are benefitting you, they are actually decreasing the quality of your sleep. Being continuously woken up out of deep sleep arouses the brain and settles it repeatedly which prevents your body from completing the necessary healing it needs.

Our bodies are designed to perform its maintenance work in a single session without prolonged awakenings. Take this into consideration the next time you hit snooze.
