Primary Organ Source Countries (Suppliers)
These nations are often targeted by traffickers who prey on vulnerable, impoverished populations, sometimes referred to as "hot spots" for the trade.
South and Southeast Asia: India, Pakistan, Nepal (specifically known areas like "Kidney Valley"), Bangladesh, the Philippines, Vietnam, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, and Malaysia have all been identified as significant source regions.
Middle East and North Africa: Egypt is a major hub, with other activity reported in Iran (despite its legal domestic system, which does not allow sales to foreigners), Turkey, and Iraq. Eritrean and Sudanese asylum seekers in Egypt have also been identified as potential victims of trafficking.
Eastern Europe and Central Asia: Countries like Moldova, Romania, Russia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, and Georgia have been cited as source regions where people, driven by poverty, sell their kidneys.
