Tether, the world's largest issuer of USD-pegged stablecoins, said its user base has hit 500 million for the first time.

"USDT reached officially 500 million users," CEO Paolo Ardoino said in a post to X. "Likely the biggest financial inclusion achievement in history."

Total supply for Tether's USDT stablecoin is at nearly $182 billion, according to The Block Data Dashboard. The second-largest issuer is Circle with about $75 billion of USDC in circulation.

"Programmable money is the ultimate social network," Ardoino said Tuesday. "A peer-to-peer construct that transports both information and value."

China’s former Minister for Agriculture and Rural Affairs has been sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve for accepting massive bribes. The verdict was announced by a court in Jilin province.

According to official reports, Tang received bribes in the form of cash and property worth more than 268 million yuan (approximately 37.6 million US dollars) during his service in various government positions between 2007 and 2024.

The Changchun Intermediate People’s Court noted that Tang had confessed to his crimes. Because of this confession, his death sentence has been suspended for two years, which could later be commuted to life imprisonment if he shows good conduct.

In November 2024, China’s Communist Party expelled Tang from membership, following an investigation launched by the country’s anti-graft watchdog. His removal came months after he was officially dismissed from his post.

Starbucks is preparing to close hundreds of its cafés this month and cut dozens of jobs at its corporate headquarters, as the coffee giant confronts mounting financial pressures. Under CEO Brian Niccol’s restructuring plan, the company will shutter roughly 1 percent of its North American locations — taking the total from 18,734 to about 18,300 by the end of the fiscal year.

Alongside the store closures, Starbucks will eliminate approximately 900 non-retail jobs at its headquarters and support offices. These cuts are part of a broader effort to reduce costs, streamline operations, and re-invest resources into store-level improvements and new café designs.

Niccol said the company reviewed underperforming cafés and identified locations where it could not create the standard experience customers expect or achieve sustainable financial performance. Workers at affected locations will receive notices this week, and some will be offered transfers to nearby stores. Severance and support packages will be offered to impacted corporate employees.

The $1 billion restructuring plan reflects Starbucks’ need to adapt amid falling sales, tight margins, and increasing competition in its core markets.
