Scoliosis is an abnormal lateral curvature of the spine. It is most often diagnosed in childhood or early adolescence. The spine's normal curve occur at the cervical thoracic and lumbar regions in the so called" sagittal plane" . These normal curves position the head over the pelvis and work as a shock absorber to distribute mechanical stress during movement.
Scoliosis affects 2-3% of the population, it can occur in infancy and childhood, however the age of onset of for scoliosis is 10-15 years old, occuring equally among both genders. Females are eight times more likely to progress to a curve magnitude that requires treatment.
Patients with scoliosis often complains about
- Shoulders are uneven.
- Head is not centered.
- One or both hips are raised.
- Rib cages are at different heights.
- Difficulty in breathing.
- Waist is uneven.
- The entire body leans to one side.
Diagnosis is usually confirmed through a physical examination, an X-ray of spine, CT scan or MRI of spine. The curve is measured by the Cobb Method and is diagnosed in terms of severity by the number of degrees. A curve greater than 25 degree is considered to be significant.
I'm publishing some of the pictures and videos of one of my patient of scoliosis after the permission of the patient and his family. Mr. Waseem 17 years old boy had presented to my OPD with difficulty in walking and breathing for the past few years and had a Cobb's angle of 90 degrees. The patient underwent surgery at National Medical Center Defence phase 2 Karachi. He had an admission of three days only and was mobilized out of bed with in 24 hrs of surgery.
