The Nucleic Acid Test (NAT) for HIV is an advanced blood test that detects the actual virus (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) in the body by identifying its genetic material (RNA), rather than relying on the bodyβs immune response. This makes it one of the earliest and most accurate methods of diagnosis, capable of detecting infection within about 10β33 days after exposure. The test is performed using a blood sample from a vein and can also measure the viral load, which helps in monitoring treatment. However it requires specialized laboratory equipment which is available at National Medcial Centre. NAT is not typically used for routine screening and is usually recommended in cases of recent high-risk exposure, early symptoms, or when other HIV test results are unclear.
