𝐌𝐫𝐬. 𝐅𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐝𝐚, 𝟓𝟐, 𝐬𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐫𝐧:
“I assumed my knee stiffness was simply part of ageing after 20 years of teaching. It wasn’t until I found myself struggling to climb the stairs once we moved to a new place that I began to worry. This pain keeps getting worst and only settles with some rest. What should I do?

𝐃𝐫. 𝐍𝐚𝐯𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐉𝐮𝐦𝐚𝐧 𝐁𝐚𝐥𝐨𝐜𝐡, 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐎𝐫𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐩𝐚𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐜 𝐒𝐮𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐭 𝐂𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐭𝐨𝐧 𝐌𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐒𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐬, 𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐝:
“Mrs. Farida’s story is very common. Many adults ignore joint pain, assuming it is an inevitable part of ageing. However, this is likely to be osteoarthritis (OA) which is a manageable condition, especially when identified early. Let’s talk about osteoarthritis.

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐨𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐬 (𝐎𝐀)? OA is a degenerative joint disease involving progressive cartilage breakdown, changes in the underlying bone, and mild inflammation. By the time symptoms such as stiffness or a grinding sensation (crepitus) appear, structural changes may already be underway. Early diagnosis helps us preserve joint function and slow progression.

𝐈𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐝𝐢𝐚𝐠𝐧𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐬 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐦𝐞𝐚𝐧 𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐲. Being diagnosed with OA does not mean you are headed for the operating room. Most patients are successfully managed with specialised physiotherapy, weight management, activity modification, pain control, and joint-preserving treatments. Surgery is typically only needed for advanced cases.

𝐌𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬. Many people reduce activity to ‘protect’ their joints. The truth is that appropriate low-impact exercise strengthens supporting muscles, promotes healthy joint mechanics, and aids synovial fluid circulation, which nourishes cartilage. Diagnosis is the first step toward moving better, not moving less.”

Rare diseases are often considered uncommon. Yet in Pakistan, inherited conditions such as thalassemia major, spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), Duchenne muscular dystrophy, certain metabolic disorders, and primary immunodeficiencies affect many families.

Many of these conditions begin at birth, and where treatment is available, early detection can significantly change a child’s health outcomes.

Newborn screening helps identify serious, but often treatable, conditions before symptoms appear, enabling timely intervention and improving long-term outcomes.
At AKUH, our multidisciplinary teams across genetics, laboratory medicine, paediatrics, and specialised services work together to support families facing complex diagnoses.

A cancer diagnosis is often treated as a family secret or perceived as a ‘death sentence’ in our society. Misinformation and the stigma surrounding the disease frequently lead to delays in seeking appropriate treatment — or, in some cases, avoiding care altogether.

In this important conversation, Dr Misbah Soomro and Dr Rabia Fareed from Aga Khan University Hospital address the fears, myths, and social stigma that often prevent patients in Pakistan from seeking timely care.
