Janazah Prayer Method (For an Adult Muslim)

The funeral prayer (Salat al-Janazah) is a collective obligation (Fard Kifayah) in Islam. If some Muslims perform it, the responsibility is lifted from the rest. Below is the step-by-step method for offering Janazah prayer for an adult Muslim:

Step-by-Step Method:

1. Niyyah (Intention):
Make the intention in your heart that you are offering the Janazah prayer for the deceased.

2. First Takbir:
Raise your hands, say Allahu Akbar, then fold your hands and recite the opening supplication (Thana):

سُبْحَانَكَ اللّٰهُمَّ وَبِحَمْدِكَ، وَتَبَارَكَ اسْمُكَ، وَتَعَالٰى جَدُّكَ، وَلَا اِلٰهَ غَيْرُكَ

3. Second Takbir:
Say Allahu Akbar again and recite Durood-e-Ibrahim:

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَىٰ آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ، كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَىٰ إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَعَلَىٰ آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ
اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَىٰ آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ، كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَىٰ إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَعَلَىٰ آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ

4. Third Takbir:
Say Allahu Akbar and recite the funeral supplication:

اَللّٰهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِحَيِّنَا وَمَيِّتِنَا، وَشَاهِدِنَا وَغَائِبِنَا، وَصَغِيرِنَا وَكَبِيرِنَا، وَذَكَرِنَا وَاُنْثَانَا
اَللّٰهُمَّ مَنْ أَحْيَيْتَهُ مِنَّا فَأَحْيِهِ عَلَى الْإِسْلَامِ، وَمَنْ تَوَفَّيْتَهُ مِنَّا فَتَوَفَّهُ عَلَى الْإِيمَانِ

5. Fourth Takbir:
Say Allahu Akbar, make a short du‘a if you wish, then end the prayer by turning your head right and saying:
السلام عليكم ورحمة الله

Important Note:

There is no Ruku (bowing) or Sujood (prostration) in Janazah prayer.

The prayer consists only of Takbirs and supplications.
