Nipah virus (NiV) is a rare but highly dangerous zoonotic virus transmitted from animals (especially fruit bats) to humans. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Nipah outbreaks have reported fatality rates between 40%โ75%, making it one of the more serious emerging infectious diseases.
How does it spread?
โข Contact with infected fruit bats or pigs
โข Consuming raw date palm sap contaminated by bats
โข Close contact with infected individuals
Symptoms (4โ14 days after exposure):
Fever, headache, muscle pain, cough, breathing difficulty โ and in severe cases, brain inflammation (encephalitis), confusion, seizures, and coma.
There is currently no approved vaccine or specific antiviral treatment, so prevention and early medical care are critical.
