LEAP for Intersex and Trans

LEAP for Intersex and Trans This is a passion project, to raise correct awareness about Intersex and Transgender individuals. The baby has no say in getting a sex assigned at birth!

When a baby is born it is assigned a sex which is either male (having Male anatomy), female (having Female anatomy) or Intersex ( ambiguous genitals). When the baby grows up, 2 years onwards he/she starts expressing their choices in what they like to wear, what role they play in a game, what clothes they want to put on, etc, that's how they express their gender the way they perceive themselves. In

most cases a baby assigned as male child, expresses traits of masculinity, that is also what is expected of him and a female child expresses traits of femininity. Unfortunately in Pakistan most cases of ambiguous genitals are misunderstood, due to lack of knowledge, are frowned upon by parents, siblings and peers, and either given up to strangers or abused at home. Ideally the intersex child should be sent home with a sex assigned at birth according to the results of certain tests, physical appearance and future sexual potential, in accordance with the latest guidelines. And the parents should be told to allow free expression of gender to understand how they perceive themselves. Only some of those children have dysphoria. A dysphoric individual will be in extreme distress and depression because of the sex assigned at birth and his/her perception of himself/herself and they will need help transitioning. So a Trans man would be a child with female anatomy but a masculinized brain and a Trans woman would be a child with a male anatomy but a feminine brain. It isn't an easy process and because of the discrimination and stigma they suffer from mental health issues. So in short Man = Trans man & Woman = Trans woman when dealing with human rights. Health needs for trans are various too. There are guidelines available on that. Please be advised that Islam is a tolerant religion, it allows surgeries in certain cases (Al-Azhar University of Egypt has given fatwas back in 1989)
Sex assigned at birth is Not the same as Gender. Gender is a spectrum and all of us experience life with a mix of femininity and masculinity, easily explained by the hormonal balance or imbalances in us. Once that child reaches puberty, certain hormones kick in, and the adolescent now experiences sexuality too. That's when sexual orientation comes into play. Your brain tells you who you desire physically, you may not express those desires and control them at will and all individuals have sexual and reproductive health rights that should be known to all healthcare providers. Lack of knowledge is no excuse! PMDC has set code of ethics on unbiased practice! Those codes are shared on this page too.

7.5 years back I started talking about this, sharing this again...
Raise correct awareness...
Please don't push your children to conform to what you think might be right.
Their bodies function a bit differently and their brain and body chemistry is also different.

My heart is filled with gratitude as I collect this certificate.
Many doctors are completely unaware of how to manage the health of gender-variant clients.
As a gender-affirming physician, completing this foundation course means a lot to me. It aligns with my goal of serving gender minorities with a standard of care advised by WPATH.

Every case is different, every body is different, hence one size fits all approach will not work.
Working without a system in place has always been a challenge.

If you are catering to gender minorities as a healthcare provider, please reach out as I am looking forward to connecting with you to offer my mentorship so you can also offer better inclusive quality care!

Transgender and inters*x people share overlapping struggles despite their distinct identities. Both groups have been pathologized and medicalized, with inters*x individuals often facing unnecessary surgeries in infancy and transgender people navigating medical gatekeeping for gender-affirming care. They struggle for identity and autonomy in legal and social systems that enforce rigid binary classifications. Discrimination, stigma, and exclusion impact their access to education, healthcare, and employment. Scientifically, both challenge outdated notions of s*x and gender, proving that human diversity extends beyond simple XX/XY binaries.

It’s time for recognition, respect, and rights for all !!

As a WPATH member, I want to promote evidence based care, education, research, public policy, and respect in transgender health.

I share the vision with other WPATH members in transforming this world into a place where all gender identities and gender expressions have access to evidence based healthcare, adapted as necessary to our citizens.
I call upon other healthcare providers to advocate for improved access to care while respecting the autonomy of individuals.
There is no one size fits all approach.
WPATH strongly recommends Against the use of conversion therapies.
Conducting this medical camp was an attempt to make healthcare more inclusive in our country.

I thank each and every doctor, staff and lab techs who joined me and the KCH team for removing barriers to care for me.

Looking forward to collaboration with other hospitals/healthcare facilities to train their providers in gender related standards of care.

Another effort to make healthcare inclusive!

If you are a healthcare provider, please learn about some basics of transgender healthcare.
Why is it necessary?
Because Pakistan has a lot of gender variant people, who may identify as khwajasira, trans men, trans women, non-binary, or agender and every body needs healthcare specific to their particular needs.
Some may have been announced female at birth and some male at birth, despite having an inters*x variation.
Highest attainable health is a basic human right.
Without specific medical knowledge about gender variance and bodily diversity, healthcare providers will not be able to provide adequate ethical services.

This series is a 12 session commitment, Class 1 happening on 15th Feb at 430pm. Classes will hopefully happen twice a month.
Fee is subsidized to 5000/- PKR per session.
Only registered participants will receive the zoom link.
Comment or DM for more details.

Every soul has a purpose.
You may have some talents or skills that will make you stand out from the crowd.
I met Nisha when she used to beg to pay for her tuition fee.
She resorted to begging to pursue her career.
Some resort to other means to just stay alive.
We need to address the root cause of why gender diverse adolescents are rejected by their own parents and very few like Nisha are able to get education and work with average cisgender people.

I believe that Medical gatekeeping must be addressed.
When healthcare providers understand gender variance they can counsel parents to such children and adolescents so they can be supported adequately.

I offer sensitisation workshops so if anyone is looking for inclusion, please reach out.

Please understand that before you go inclusive, don't forget to sensitize the existing population to avoid mishaps like harassment, micro aggressions, discrimination, etc.

Grateful to for inviting me as a panelist yesterday.
"Moorat" a documentary by was screened.
moderated the panel discussion and brought up some very critical points around the rights of gender minorities.
MPA Dr. Fozia Hameed, Adv. Nisha Rao, Film maker Kashif Shayari and I shared our sentiments.
As an inclusive practitioner and a gender affirming physician, I feel very strongly for them.
I pray more awareness can be raised so that transphobia and GBV can be stopped.

Project : LEAP for Inters*x

When a baby is born it is assigned a s*x which is either male (having Male anatomy), female (having Female anatomy) or in case of ambiguous ge****ls, the baby is given a label after surgery or assigned male or female based on a few test results. The baby has no say in getting a s*x assigned at birth! Inters*x doesn’t have to do with ge****ls alone. When the baby grows up, 2 years onwards he/she starts expressing their choices in what they like to wear, what role they play in a game, what clothes they want to put on, etc, that's how they express their gender the way they perceive themselves. In most cases a baby labeled as male child, expresses traits of masculinity, that is also what is expected of him and a female child expresses traits of femininity.
