Close to our hearts , our Armed Forces Officers , a day you all must retire and a day we all must die ,to be either cursed for not doing what was within our means or remembered in prayers for doing any good , to be welcomed in our graves with fire or flowers. That is what the end would be of us all. Let us thus use our choices wisely and prudently.

Five die of electrocution as rain pounds Karachi

KARACHI: As heavy rain disrupted life in the city for the fifth consecutive day on Friday, six people died in different parts of the metropolis, five of them of electrocution.

Karachi received 57.5 millimetres, or 2.2 inches, of rain on Friday and the Met Office said more rain is expected on Saturday (today).

The rain played havoc with the ill-maintained transmission and distribution system of the K-Electric as power supply was disrupted in many parts of the city and took hours to be restored.Hours-long traffic jams on key arteries were also witnessed in the aftermath of the rain. Civic authorities also failed to drain out rainwater accumulated in various city areas including main roads till late in the night.

Electrocution deaths Two motorcyclists suffered electric shock and died when a live wire snapped from a pole-mounted transformer (PMT) and fell on them near a seminary in SIT E.

The wire apparently fell due to the heavy rains, said SITE-A SHO Saleem Awan. He identified the victim as Abdul Rauf, 35, and Abdul Mannan, 45. The bodies were taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for medico-legal formalities.

The officer said they would wait for victims` relatives for registration of an FIR to pursue the case legally.

In Moosa Colony, two brothers were electrocuted in the evening.

An Edhi Foundation spokesperson said that accumulated rainwaterentered a house and a live electric wire fell in the water, killing 11-year-old Javed and 14-year-old Saleem.

Eight-year-old Arman died of electric shock inside his house in Hijrat Colony. The body was broughttotheJinnahPostgraduate Medical Centre, but the child`s relatives took it away without completing medico-legal formalities.

Boy feared drowned A boy was feared drowned in the Lyari River that swelled after the rain on Friday evening.

Liaquatabad SHO Liaquat Hayat said that some boys were playing at the bank of the Lyari River when two of them drowned near Teen Hatti area. One of them was rescued immediately but the other one drowned.

He said efforts were under way to recover him. He was identified as seven-year-old Sufiyan Karamat.

Meanwhile, a woman suffered an electric shock while walking on a footpath in Boat Basin. She wassaved by area people who shifted her to a hospital for treatment.

SSP South Sheeraz Nazeer said that Samia Irfan became unconscious and fell there due to the electric shock. She was shifted to the JPMC from where she got discharged after initial medical treatment.

Meanwhile, a KE spokesperson said that the power utility regretted the loss of human lives in SIT E due to electrocution.

Soon after the incident, the KE immediately disconnected the power supply in the area. `The incident was being probed,` he added.

Nazimabad receives maximum rainfall The Met Office said that maximum rain, 57.5mm or 2.2 inches, was recorded in Nazimabad followed by Saddar and Surjani Town, 45mm each; 33mm at Masroor Base; 20mm in Landhi; 27mm in North Karachi, 11mm at Faisal Base, 3mm in Gulistan-iJauhar/University Road and 2mmof rain was recorded in Airport area.

The maximum and minimum temperature was 34.3°C and 25°C.

The humidity was 84 per cent in the evening.

It said that rain/wind/thunderstorm was expected at isolated places in lower Sindh on Saturday as the region was still under the influence of a low-pressure area built up across the border.

The weather is likely to remain hot and humid. The districts where rain is expected include Karachi, Mirpurkhas, Umerkot, Thatta and Badin.

`The sea breeze and cloudy weather is likely to return by Sunday evening in Karachi. We expect that these conditions could persist till Oct 6 (in the city),` said Sardar Sarfaraz of the Met department.

The month of September was part of the monsoon period in Pakistan, though weather conditions over the week experienced specifically in Karachi could be described as a `bit unusual`, he added.

Pakistan’s forgotten residents

In our prayers for the poor and oppressed of this world, including those in Palestine, Iraq and Afghanistan, we can be somewhat forgiven for ignoring the plight of more than a quarter million ghetto dwellers in squalid camps in Bangladesh. These are the Biharis, forgotten remnants of the 1971 Indo-Pak war leading to the birth of Bangladesh, and there are very few voices that bring their miserable conditions to the fore.

While the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights states every person has a right to nationality, these “stranded Pakistanis” enjoy no such luxury. For the past 37 years, they have been languishing in 66 squalid camps spread across Bangladesh, each no bigger than a football field, with poor sanitation and shortage of running water.

Camp conditions are miserable, and large groups of families are often forced to share their living area with animals. They have no rights, have only limited job options and few, if any, economic prospects. They are refugees. Although they did not flee their country, their country appears to have forgotten them.

In pre-independence India, they were a Muslim minority in the state of Bihar. At the time of the partition in 1947, many moved to what was then East Pakistan. When civil war broke out between East and West Pakistan, the Biharis sided with the West. Subsequently in 1971, East Pakistan became the independent state of Bangladesh, and these Biharis who had been loyal to Pakistan were denied citizenship because they were deemed collaborators who had “supported the enemy”.

Their first choice was to leave the new nation and go to what was left of Pakistan. They expected to be welcomed, and they waited. Almost four decades later, they continue to wait in silence and despair. Pakistan initially denied them permission to emigrate, fearing a massive influx could destabilize the country. Now they find themselves in a legal limbo facing an even more despondent future.

A few groups have tried to help these people and come up with a worthy solution. One was the Rabita Trust established in 1988 under the auspices of the then Pakistani President Zia ul-Haque, and Dr. Abdullah Omar Naseef, the then secretary-general of the Muslim World League. They put forth a proposal to organize the repatriation of the stranded Pakistanis and settle them in the Punjab province of Pakistan. An estimated 40,000 homes were to be built and were to be freely allocated to those Biharis, funding coming primarily through donations.

Over 3000 destitute families were issued Pakistani ID cards back in 1992 and over 1000 housing units were built in the Punjab to accommodate them. Unfortunately, funds were not forthcoming, and the political changes in Pakistan in recent years had slowly pushed this issue to the backburner. Meanwhile, the camp dwellers suffer in silence. The Pakistani Repatriation Council (PRC), made up of some dedicated individuals who want to see an end to this injustice, has been highlighting the issue of stranded Biharis and appealing to successive governments in Pakistan to resolve the problem. In their recent proposal, they suggest the following:
“The government of Bangladesh should be included as a full member of the Rabita Trust. Notwithstanding the fact that the Bangladeshi government had recently announced that they would selectively issue national passports for those born in the camps, their presence in the trust is essential.

“The Pakistani High Commissioner (ambassador) in Bangladesh should play an active part in ensuring the protection and security of these stranded refugees.

“The government of Pakistan should demand ‘refugee status’ from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) for these people to allow them to receive essential UN aid in the form of food, medicine, education and other basic necessities until their issue is finally resolved.

“Those families who were previously issued Pakistani nationality cards and who still suffer in the camps should be repatriated as a matter of priority.

“The Rabita Trust, frozen by President Musharraf back in 2001 should be reactivated to allow the building projects to continue.
“Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) should include this matter on their agenda and persuade national and international aid organizations to extend necessary sustenance allowances until they are repatriated.

“The IDB, ADB and national banks must loosen their coffers to build an estimated 37,000 homes in Punjab province where land has been previously allocated for the remainder of these stranded Pakistanis.

“Gulf countries facing a shortage of semi-skilled labor due to an unprecedented building boom could offer meaningful employment to these people living beyond hope.”

Pakistan faces many challenges. But one of them should be the protection of rights for all its citizens. While the PRC is actively promoting the cause of these destitute people, it cannot do everything. It is our moral obligation to keep the issue alive.

Taliban : Give them, no weapons, no logistic and financial support, but direly needed jobs where they are residing to make them find alternative and productive as well as dearly needed bread earning engagements. Give them recognition, to very those who put their lives secondary to their cause. Let them have a city or a province of their own to conduct their affairs shariah compliant. What is wrong in it for the silly world who has guts to allow gay marriages protected by the law.

Challenge them to explore natural resources, find new frontiers in economic endeavours, reclaim lands, find and mine rich deposits, lead them to find a good purpose to pursue.

Let them find a new lease of a happy and peaceful life with sound sleeps at nights with good wages and do not leave them alone to be found by others who are determined to cause mischief and save them from giving up lives in su***de bombings with no fruitful ends for them or for their loved ones.

Let us develop Pakistan’s Northern Areas as a mega medical province with the help of the donor countries , UNO specific relevant funds, Bill Gates and Warren Buffet foundations, the UNICEF, the universal medical profession , health ministries, medicine industry, health industry plus with cooperation of local population and support of 1000 richest families in Pakistan , a 1000 richest of the world and the lending institutions and Gulf Sovereign funds for our global community with universities for students and hospitals for the sick from all over the world with homes for neglected and separated , mostly western, elderly for a managed living to spend their final days in comfort of beautiful valleys, excellent climate, healthy environment at a friction of the cost they incur back at their home places with secured hostels for the students ,doctors , paramedical staff and the teaching faculties plus hotels for the visitors thereby making those areas economically viable and self-sustainable providing at the same times employment and skill enhancement opportunities for the local population to live in peace while engaged in bread earning noble tasks in the field of health services with a total ban on smoking and other to***co usage. Airports, railway tracks, roads and bridges be built to facilitate movement. Foreign, as well as local investment be facilitated with concessions and easy legislation in Businesses and Industries of local interests.
