💧 Safe Water, Healthier Lives 💧

Sustainable Business Development (SBD) has launched a vital water testing initiative in District Naushahro Feroze, using the Portable Microbiology Laboratory (PML) testing kit to assess biological contamination in drinking water.

Led by Dr. Robert Metcalf and Project Lead Anosha Nangraj, this initiative empowers local communities with scientific tools and health awareness, aiming to prevent waterborne diseases and promote long-term public health.

🧪 Through on-ground sampling and rapid testing, we are:
✔️ Identifying harmful pathogens
✔️ Educating local communities
✔️ Promoting access to clean and safe drinking water

This project is a step toward sustainable development, climate resilience, and health equity in rural Pakistan.

📍Together, we’re building a healthier tomorrow—one drop at a time.

Sustainable Business Development (SBD) x Management & Development Foundation (MDF): A Powerful Collaboration for Safer Water in Lower Sindh

A significant milestone was achieved as SBD and MDF signed an MoU at MDF’s headquarters—uniting forces under SBD’s JARR Project to improve drinking water quality in Lower Sindh.

As part of this initiative, 30 Portable Microbiology Laboratory (PML) testing kits have been handed over to MDF. These innovative kits enable rapid, reliable, and user-friendly water quality assessments—especially for hand pump water sources that many rural communities depend on.

Together, SBD and MDF will:

Conduct widespread water quality testing in Lower Sindh

Train and empower communities to use PML kits for independent water monitoring

Raise awareness about waterborne health risks and drive data-backed interventions

This partnership is more than just collaboration—it’s a commitment to public health, sustainability, and community empowerment.

Let’s make clean drinking water a right, not a privilege.

Sustainable Business Development (SBD) Pvt. Ltd. set up a Demonstration and Feedback Collection Desk for Sindhi Handicrafts by Women Artisans at Habib University, Karachi, in celebration of Sindhi Cultural Day.

In collaboration with SRSO, this initiative marked a key milestone in SBD’s research-driven approach to artisan development. The initiative focused on:

🔹 Market Feedback – Capturing customer preferences to help artisans align their crafts with modern trends.
🔹 Knowledge Exchange – Engaging researchers, students, and policymakers in meaningful discussions on empowering artisans.

The insights gathered will shape future counselling and consultative workshops for the SRSO female artisan community.

This research was led by Ms. Anosha, CEO of SBD and a dedicated researcher.

Empowering Communities Through Knowledge & Collaboration

On Friday, April 11, 2025, a delegation of students from Habib University Karachi, led by Ms. Anosha Nangraj—Public Health Policy Researcher and CEO of Sustainable Business Development Pvt. Ltd. (SBD)—visited various departments of the Sindh Rural Support Organization (SRSO) Complex in Sukkur.

The visit offered valuable insights into SRSO’s transformative work, particularly the SRSO–Sartyoon Sang Crafts Enterprise, where rural women artisans are preserving heritage through intricate handmade crafts. The delegation deeply appreciated the artistry and resilience showcased by these empowered women.

Facilitated by the Senior Manager of Administration and the Manager of Crafts Enterprise Development, the visit also highlighted ongoing collaboration between SRSO and SBD under a formal MoU. Ms. Anosha, who has extensively researched and documented the stories of SRSO’s women artisans in her recently authored book, is also working closely on the deployment of mobile water testing kits—training both SRSO teams and local communities.

This exposure visit was a testament to the power of partnerships, research, and grassroots innovation in driving sustainable change.

MoU Signing ✍️ SBD x MDF

On January 18, 2025, Sustainable Business Development (SBD) signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Management and Development Foundation (MDF), a nationally recognized non-profit organization committed to poverty alleviation and improving the quality of life for marginalized communities.

Ms. Anosha, CEO of SBD, and Mr. Junaid Shaikh Executive Director of MDF, signed the MoU.

This collaboration is part of our JARR (Groundwater) Project in lower and middle Sindh, focusing on addressing the critical issue of unsafe drinking water in the region. Through this pilot initiative, we will use PML kits to conduct water quality tests, aiming to identify contaminants and work towards providing clean and safe drinking water to underserved communities.

SBD is also implementing this project in upper Sindh in partnership with SRSO, with the broader objective of conducting academic research on public health issues. The research aims to generate actionable policy recommendations for stakeholders to drive sustainable change.

Ms. Anosha, researcher and CEO of SBD, is collaborating with Dr. Metcalf to test Portable Microbiology Laboratory kits (PML) and explore user-friendly solutions, empowering community members—particularly women—to independently test their drinking water and take necessary actions to ensure its safety.

🚰 Bringing Portable Microbiology Laboratory for the first time to Sindh, Pakistan🌱

As the drinking water quality in Sindh worsens due to multidimensional factors, such as climate change, over-extraction, and pollution, it's crucial that we take immediate action to address the growing threat to our communities' health and livelihoods. We are proud to announce that the Portable Microbiology Laboratory (PML) Kit, developed by Dr. Robert Metcalf, has been launched in Pakistan for the very first time under the leadership of Anosha Nangraj, CEO of Sustainable Business Development Ltd. Anosha Nangraj is a senior year student pursuing her Bachelors in Social Development and Policy at Habib Univeristy. She has been doing research on drinking water testing for 2 years now, and this is yet another project she will be leading.

This kit was presented to Anosha Nangraj by Dr Robert Metcalf, Professor Emeritus in Biological Sciences in Sacramento State - College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics in California, while Anosha Nangraj presented her research at American Society for Microbiology in USA.

This initiative is focused on addressing the critical issue of water contamination in rural communities. PML kit is revolutionising the testing of drinking water for Coliform and E.coli, by making this process easy to be conducted at home!

In collaboration with SRSO - Sindh Rural Support Organization, we recently visited Village Mud Khoso, District Shikarpur and conducted session on usage of PML kit. Women from 20+ villages gathered to learn about the hazards of unsafe drinking water and the procedure of using PML kit to test drinking water right from the comfort of their home. Anosha Nangraj demonstrated the PML kit's practical use in testing for biological contaminants, empowering local communities to take charge of their water quality testing. 💧

As rightly stated by Dr Robert, "With PML Kit anyone can be a water microbiologist." That is what we aim to achieve to empower our communities.
