Capacity-Building in Physiotherapy for Hemophilia Care
Training Session with DPT Students from Metropolitan University
The Hemophilia Welfare Society Karachi Pakistan (HWSK) recently hosted a one-day capacity-building session for 11 Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) students from Metropolitan University. The training was designed to enhance students’ understanding of the vital role physiotherapy plays in managing hemophilia, particularly for patients experiencing repeated joint bleeds that lead to muscle weakness, joint instability, and long-term deformities.
The session featured an informative presentation by Dr. Rukhsanda, who highlighted how early physiotherapy intervention can prevent hemophilic arthropathy. She explained how strengthening weak muscles, improving joint alignment, and adhering to international rehabilitation protocols can reduce the frequency of target joint bleeds and delay disability.
Students participated in practical demonstrations that covered:
Kinesio-taping techniques for joint support
Physical assessment methods, including range of motion and muscle strength evaluation
Use of essential functional outcome tools such as the Hemophilia Joint Health Score (HJHS), EQ-5D-5L, and Functional Independence Score in Hemophilia (FISH)
These hands-on exercises helped students learn how to assess joint health, interpret functional scores, and develop individualized rehabilitation plans tailored to patient needs.
The interactive training format allowed participants to engage in real-case discussions, offering valuable insights into the specialized care required for hemophilia patients—knowledge often missing in standard physiotherapy education.
Reflecting on the initiative, Raheel Ahmed Khan (CEO, HWSK) emphasized that such trainings align with HWSK’s commitment to building national capacity and improving the standard of hemophilia care.
