WHAT TO DO AFTER A DOG BITE.
Immediate Steps to Take After a Dog Bite
1. the Wound Thoroughly
- Wash the bite area immediately with mild soap and running water for at least 15 minutes.
- Gently scrub the wound to remove saliva, dirt, or debris, which reduces the risk of infection and rabies exposure.
2. the Wound
- After washing, apply an antiseptic such as 70% alcohol, iodine solution, or a diluted antiseptic like Dettol to kill germs.
- Avoid bandaging the wound immediately unless bleeding heavily; let it air-dry if possible.
3. Medical Care Immediately
- Visit a hospital or clinic without delay, even for minor bites. Rabies can be fatal if untreated.
- Inform healthcare providers:
- About the bite details (location, dog’s behavior/vaccination status if known).
- If the wound is deep, on the face/neck/hands, or from an unknown/unvaccinated dog.

Vaccination and Treatment Protocol
- Schedule (5 doses required):
- Day 0: First dose (administered on the day of the bite).
💉 - Day 3: Second dose.
💉 - Day 7 Third dose.
💉 - Day 14:Fourth dose.
💉 - Day 28:Fifth dose.
- Rabies Immunoglobulin (RIG):
💉 -A single dose is given on Day 0 for high-risk bites (deep wounds, face/neck/hands, or bites from suspected rabid animals).
💉 -Injected around the wound site to neutralize the virus immediately.
Notes
- Complete all vaccine doses—even if the wound heals or the dog appears healthy. Rabies symptoms can take weeks to manifest.
- delay treatment or rely on home remedies (e.g., herbs, spices, oils). Rabies is nearly 100% fatal once symptoms appear.
- If the dog can be observed, report its health status to authorities. However, do not wait for this information before seeking care.
urgency matters: Rabies has no cure after symptoms develop. Immediate action saves lives. Always prioritize medical evaluation!
