Slipped Capital Femoral Epiphysis (SCFE) is a condition where the head of the femur (thigh bone) slips off the neck of the femur at the growth plate. This displacement typically occurs in the hip joint of adolescents and pre-adolescents, often during a growth spurt. It's more common in boys and can be a result of weakening of the growth plate due to various factors.

A slippage of the femoral head (the ball) off the femoral neck (the part of the femur just below the ball) at the growth plate. Adolescents and pre-adolescents, especially boys, during or before puberty. Weakening of the growth plate (physis) due to factors like hormonal changes, trauma, or increased shearing forces from obesity.

Can include hip, groin, thigh, or knee pain, stiffness, a limp, and outward rotation of the leg. X-rays of both hips are usually sufficient for diagnosis, but sometimes other imaging may be needed. Surgical intervention is typically required to stabilize the slipped epiphysis and prevent further slippage.
Without treatment, SCFE can lead to arthritis, limited hip movement, and avascular necrosis (death of bone tissue due to lack of blood supply).
