FAREWELL TO LEGEND OF PROF AAMIR MAHMOOD IJAZ sb.
Professor Dr. Aamir Mahmood Ijaz Professor of Thoracic Surgery KEMU was born on 20th of September 1961 to a family of renowned medical professionals. He passed his Matriculation exam in 1976 from Divisional Public School and after that he passed his Intermediate exam in 1978 from Divisional Public College. He got admission to the prestigious King Edward Medical University Lahore. Official following in the footsteps of his maternal grandfather, teacher of teachers and the pioneer of the art and science of General Surgery, Professor Dr. Ameer ud Din, and his father, the pioneer of the discipline of Thoracic Surgery in Pakistan, Professor Dr. Ijaz ul Hassan. He knew from the very first day that he had some real big shoes to fill in, and he did exactly that after graduating in 1985, as he started his journey to become a just like his father. He completed his post graduation in this discipline in 1992. After working for some time as Senior Registrar in the Thoracic Surgery Department, King Edward university Mayo Hospital Lahore, he left for the United Kingdom for further training in this rare specialty, where he spent three years of vigorous training in the best thoracic surgery centres under the mentorship of one of the the best thoracic surgeons in the world, including Professor Dr. Peter Goldstraw. He returned to Pakistan to serve his own people in his parent institution and was appointed the in Punjab, and he was posted in the Thoracic Surgery Department, King Edward university Mayo Hospital Lahore, where he established the first teaching unit in this discipline in Punjab, as the Head of Department in 1995. He single handedly nurtured this specialty with very limited human resource and facilities, and his untiring efforts bore fruit as this department started flourishing. He remained the Head of this department for 26 years, right until the day of his superannuation on 19th of September, 2021. During his career in thoracic surgery, his noteworthy contributions include training postgraduate trainees in the art and science of Thoracic Surgery, introduction of minimally invasive Thoracic Surgery, establishing a full faculty department by getting the regular seats for Assistant Professor, Associate Professor and Professor approved by the Health Department Government of the Punjab after a long perseverant effort that began in 2004 and bore fruit in 2018. Under his leadership, this department got recognized for in Thoracic Surgery, in 2020, with special contribution and assistance of our worthy Vice Chancellor, Professor Khalid M Gondal (TI).
Professor Dr. Aamir Mahmud Ijaz has been a kind, gentle and extremely supportive human being towards his colleagues and peers, his trainee residents and junior doctors, para medical staff and especially towards his patients. He has been known in this institution as a humble individual with an extremely pleasant personality, who is always willing to help anyone who is in need in any and every possible way. He was given a graceful and well deserved farewell on on the occasion of his superannuation. The ceremony was hosted by the Thoracic Surgery Department, King Edward university Mayo Hospital Lahore in the conference room of Surgical Tower Mayo Hospital Lahore.
The Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Khalid M Gondal sb graced this ceremony with his presence as the Chief Guest, alongside Dr. Iftikhar Ahmad, , and a very close friend of Professor Dr. Aamir Ijaz, Professor Dr. Syed Asghar Naqi, , Professor Dr. Zara Ishrat of the , Professor Dr. Farrukh Afzal of the , Professor Dr. Mahjabeen Masood of the Interventional Radiology KEMU - Mayo Hospital Lahore , Dr. Irfan Azmatullah Associate Professor and Head of Cardiac Surgery Department mayo Hospital Lahore, Dr. Rana Wajid Ali, and Dr Salman Kazmi along with other members of staff, to name a few.
Professor Dr. Aamir Mahmud Ijaz was presented with shields of honor by the worthy Vice Chancellor and by the Department of Thoracic Surgery King Edward Medical College. The participants bade him farewell with lots of prayers and best of wishes. We all wish Professor Dr. Aamir Mahmud Ijaz a healthy, long and prosperous life ahead.
